SAP Study Shows Consumers Around the Globe Ready for Next-Generation Mobile Commerce Services

SAP-study_Mobile-Consumers_shutterstock WALLDORF — SAP AG today announced additional results of a study conducted in 17 countries, highlighting an unmet demand for mobile commerce services, with more than eight out of 10 consumers asking for more mobile interactions with banks, telcos, retailers, utilities and other businesses. While the findings indicate that consumers want more commerce services through mobile phones universally, the drivers or barriers to further adoption of mobile purchasing vary within different countries and industries. Emerging markets such as South Africa, Saudi Arabia and China show a greater pace of change, with 96 percent of respondents expressing a desire to use their mobile to buy goods or services, compared to 59 percent in mature markets.* Overall, the study found that consumers would be more likely to increase their use of mobile commerce services if they had greater choice of payment methods (64 percent), if mobile payments were accepted by more retailers (51 percent), received regular order updates (41 percent) and if they were further incentivized by brands and services (32 percent).

The research shows consumers are using their mobile phones for an increasing range of mobile commerce services, including researching products, responding to promotions, customer service inquiries and submitting meter readings to utility companies. The study also reveals important insights about what holds consumers back from using more mobile commerce and services. Nearly half of the respondents globally (46 percent) indicated the hassle of having to enter a lot of personal information, security concerns (45 percent) and lack of Internet access at the time of transaction (43 percent) were factors.

“Consumers are now ready and demanding more mobile commerce services, and they also expect to engage with their mobile phones more simply and effectively,” said Anthony Reynolds, senior vice president, Worldwide Mobile Sales and Solutions at SAP. “While progress is being made, companies must make a collective effort to provide consumers ease of use and benefits for mobile interactions and transactions, such as available technology, security and incentives. On its current trajectory, mobile occupies a tempting combination of an all-in-one communication channel, loyalty card, cash, location tracker and credit card, offering brands and companies the opportunity to connect to consumers either exclusively via mobile or as part of a multi-channel mix.”

Consumers Want More Than E-Mail and Texting Via Mobile

The study highlights a shift from a mobile-centric world to a mobile commerce-centric mindset, in terms of the type of activities carried out via mobile, with 63 percent of consumers now using their mobile phone for activities other than just making calls and texting. Half of mobile phone users (50 percent) access the internet at least once a day via their mobile and nearly one third (32 percent) have used it to purchase products or services. The ability to use their mobile device any time of the day (51 percent), on the go (51 percent), with speed (50 percent) and with convenience (50 percent) are seen as clear benefits behind this increasing consumer adoption.

As available technology leads to growing levels of sophistication, consumers around the world are increasingly turning to mobile phones as a cornerstone for communication and transactions. Eighty percent of consumers agree that businesses should use any available technology to make life easier for their customers.

Industry Highlights

Research shows that ease of use is a core principle that will accelerate overall user adoption in retail, telecommunications and banking industries.

  • Banking

    • Excluding voice calls, half of mobile owners turn to their mobile devices to pay a bill (55 percent), make a bank transfer (52 percent) and set up a new account (48 percent)

    • Providing services that are lower cost (25 percent) and personalized (22 percent) will encourage mobile owners to begin making or make more bank transfers through their mobile phone

    • To learn more, see: “Newsbyte: SAP Research Shows Mobile Consumers Demand Mobile Banking 2.0 as They Embrace More Complex Transactions

    • Retail

      • Telco:

        • Free minutes, texts and Web use (24 percent), personalized services (22 percent) and lower cost services (21 percent) will encourage consumers to use their mobile to check usage data for their mobile account

SAP Names Mark White General Manager of Global Public Services and Healthcare Industries

SAP_Mark-White_shutterstock WALLDORF — SAP AG today announced the appointment of Mark White as general manager of the global public services and healthcare industries. White will be responsible for SAP’s public services and healthcare footprint, which covers government, postal, defense and security, healthcare and education customers globally. White will report directly to Simon Paris, who recently took on the newly established role of global head of strategic industries, covering financial services industries, retail and public services. The strategic industries team will provide customers with a streamlined customer engagement model and intensify collaboration with customers and partners.

“Mark brings the experience needed to grow a key business for SAP,” said Paris. “Just as IT has moved to the heart of public service and healthcare delivery, these industries — always strategic to us — are now at the heart of SAP’s brand and agenda. Mark is an experienced, proven professional who knows how to motivate a team and get results. His collaborative, straightforward approach is exactly what we need to achieve our ambitious public services and healthcare goals.”

White will lead a team dedicated to addressing today’s complex and vitally important public service and healthcare issues — from the challenges associated with the accelerated pace of urbanization to improving people’s access to education and enhancing access to healthcare — all amid public sector budget pressures and limited resources. The public services and healthcare team will continue to focus on offering the right mix of cloud, hosted and on-premise technology that customers can use to improve their efficiency and the quality of life for the citizens, students and patients they serve.

White began his career with SAP in 2002 as chief financial officer (CFO) for the Americas region. He helped establish the SAP National Security Services (NS2) division and headed the company’s political action committee (PAC). In his previous role as CFO for the Global Customer Operactions (GCO), White oversaw strategic financial activities including such areas as legal, real estate and pricing and contracts. Prior to joining SAP, White served as the senior vice president and corporate controller at Lucent Technologies. He has held senior management roles in the IT industry since 1980, including positions with Cadence Design Systems and Unisys.

White received a master’s degree in business administration from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Cincinnati.

SAP Unveils Tools to Sense Real-Time Demand

SAP_Enterprise-Demand_shutterstock LONDON — SAP AG today announced new capabilities to improve companies’ demand management and business planning processes, delivering tools with a real-time view of market information. The announcement was made at the Gartner Supply Chain Executive Conference 2013, being held on September 23-24 in London.

Given intense global competitive pressure, companies need to transform their supply chains to become demand-driven or even market-driven. Supply chain professionals and their marketing counterparts need to work more closely together than ever before. With a real-time view on all market activity, including sentiments from social networks, leading companies will be able to sense and shape demand. Marketing will create promotions for products while agile supply chain organizations ensure rapid response to changes in demand patterns.

SAP provides the connected enterprise with a new demand management solution: The SAP Enterprise Demand Sensing application. Capabilities within the new release improve the quality of demand forecasts within the short-term horizon in order to help reduce stock-outs and expediting costs and ultimately boost sales. The application captures historical forecast trends, compares and mathematically blends different forecast sources with demand analytics and characterizes demand by analyzing historical forecast accuracy, bias and intermittency trends.

The launch of SAP Enterprise Demand Sensing comes on the heels of the newly introduced SAP Demand Signal Management application, powered by the SAP HANA platform, which integrates all relevant internal and external demand signals into a single source of truth. With SAP Demand Signal Management and SAP Enterprise Demand Sensing, combined with the SAP Advanced Planning and Optimization component, SAP now offers a holistic, end-to-end demand management solution to enable demand-driven supply chains. Customers can manage the full process from demand signal capture, both from structured and unstructured sources, to short-term and long-term forecasting, leading to an eventual increase in sales revenue and decrease in inventory costs.

“The availability of these demand management tools is a game changer for SAP customers,” said Hans Thalbauer, senior vice president, Line-of-Business Solutions for Supply Chain, SAP. “Predictive analytics capabilities allow users to significantly increase the short-term forecast, which in turn boosts sales and increases profits, all using a connected enterprise.”

Manufacturers Revitalize Operations With SAP HANA

SAP-HANA_Manufacturing_shutterstock WALLDORF — SAP AG today announced the introduction of the SAP HANA platform into solutions supporting “idea to performance,” a holistic business approach to managing the entire life cycle of a product, from design to service. To help customers reimagine how they do business with access to real-time operational data, SAP HANA will power the latest versions of manufacturing and research and development (R & D) solutions from SAP. The portfolio, including the SAP Overall Equipment Effectiveness Management (SAP OEE Management) application, the 6.0 version of the SAP Portfolio and Project Management application and the SAP Energy and Environmental Resource Management solution, represents the cornerstone of this “idea to performance” approach.

Customers today are looking for solutions to help solve the new realities of the latest real-time business challenges. SAP HANA was designed to serve as a foundation for a new breed of real-time applications that go beyond simply accelerating existing business processes, to create new customer value based on freshly available insights. The strengths of SAP HANA help deliver results in line with the pillars of this “idea to performance” approach:

  • Sustainable innovation: Manage market-driven product innovation while streamlining the innovation process

  • Responsive manufacturing: Minimize order fulfillment cycle time while maintaining the ability to support different manufacturing processes and order variability

  • Operational excellence: Cost-effectively and proactively control operational risks that can adversely affect safety, quality, reliability and asset productivity

“With SAP, today we can get transparency on energy consumption, which has a direct positive impact on our cost,” said Klaus Siegemund, senior manager, IT Area Operations, Ferrero. “With the new SAP Energy and Environmental Resource Management solution, we anticipate to further improve the near real-time aspects of energy and leverage new innovative analytics and charting capabilities with SAP HANA.”

Improve Responsive Manufacturing

Manufacturing issues are unavoidable — resources are not always reliable, machines need maintenance, raw material issues jeopardize product quality and operators make mistakes. SAP OEE Management is intended to offer visibility into these major sources of manufacturing performance loss. Such visibility into the overall production plan and plant utilization helps managers reduce both planned and unplanned downtime. This includes helping reduce speed loss and minor stops due to bottlenecks, blocks and jams that do not require maintenance. The benefits shall help lead to a lower cost of manufacturing via improved product quality, higher resource utilization, decreased asset downtime and minimized performance loss.

On an enterprise level, by leveraging SAP OEE Management powered by SAP HANA, it is aimed that managers will be able to compare and benchmark the performance of similar assets from different facilities, providing insights into expected performance and detecting variances. This is intended to enable the faster identification of root cause and resolution, driving continuous process improvement. Operational performance information shall be combined with the business context to improve decision-making, which is planned to help increase schedule adherence, allocate capital more efficiently and improve quality enhancing customer satisfaction. The intended ability to monitor and improve the effectiveness of manufacturing processes will not only improve the individual plant’s performance, but also provide an opportunity for broader business and supply chain performance improvements.

Optimize Large Product Portfolio Management

Organizations today are increasingly pressured to produce more products both tailored to specific customer needs and with shorter life cycles. With each new product, a manager must ascertain whether the money, people and plant space are available. From there, to manage new products in portfolios efficiently, each activity in each plant needs to be handled simultaneously with a portfolio view. This means looking across all new products at once to ensure they are on budget, on time, resourced and on a path to becoming profitable. In overseeing these individual tasks, a massive amount of transactional data must be analyzed. Given increasing complexity, a traditional system often cannot manage this level of data.

With the planned inclusion of SAP HANA in the 6.0 version of SAP Portfolio and Project Management, an integrated approach is intended to allow a manager to see a holistic view of all the aspects of the projects within the portfolio. The central starting point for all users aims to be accelerated, bringing project managers and project team members together. Portfolio management is aimed to happen in real time, allowing a manager to drill down instantaneously into a project and work with the data to tackle any red flags. Different activities within the project, including those that require payment, specific tools or procurement action, are also envisioned to be displayed, and portfolio dashboards shall be accelerated. It is planned that the end results will lead to enhanced project efficiency and user productivity and improved support for the calculation of the most relevant financial key performance indicators.

Drive Operational Excellence

Financial officers and operations managers at manufacturing companies struggle to control energy costs and are faced with a complex landscape of data, intricate standards for compliance and a volatile energy market. Powered by SAP HANA, SAP Energy and Environmental Resource Management was developed to meet these challenges as a next-generation analytics and planning solution that enables companies to optimize their energy spend and reduce emissions.

SAP Energy and Environmental Resource Management is intended to look at energy data embedded at operational and enterprise levels. Data from the shop-floor level of a plant shall be pulled and integrated using the SAP Manufacturing Intelligence and Integration (SAP MII) application. With the inclusion of SAP HANA, analytics shall then be able to be built on top of SAP MII to share the data in real time. SAP HANA shall further help to quickly calculate metrics such as carbon and energy intensities, and aggregate data in real time from across multiple sources. This shall lead to the availability of important information such as machine outages, and shall also enable the planning and monitoring of corporate energy and environmental key performance indicators (KPIs) as well as near real-time tracking for operational performance. Users shall be able to consolidate, prioritize and track energy improvement initiatives to meet energy savings goals or support standards in a systematic approach, helping to reduce costs. Additionally, the energy analytics are planned to be pushed out via mobile devices to various stakeholders in the organization.

“Without real-time data, manufacturers face an inability to adapt quickly as conditions change,” said Scott Bolick, head of Idea to Performance, SAP. “By augmenting solutions with the capabilities of SAP HANA, we can offer customers the ability to store a broader selection of manufacturing enterprise and operational data, to analyze these larger complex data sets for new business insights and then to take action on these insights with our ‘idea to performance’ approach — all at speeds not previously possible.”

SAP Helps Customers Achieve Real-Time Big Data Results With SAP HANA and Hadoop

Big-Data_SAP-Data-Science_shutterstock SAN FRANCISCO — SAP AG today announced the expansion of big data offerings around three major pillars: the SAP HANA platform, applications enabled for big data and data science. SAP has entered reseller agreements with Intel and Hortonworks to resell and support the Intel Distribution Apache Hadoop and the Hortonworks Data Platform with SAP HANA, expanding existing partnerships with both vendors. SAP also announced a new big data-enabled application for manufacturers. Furthermore, SAP has created a new Data Science organization to better help customers uncover relevant signals within their data. Additionally, the “Big Data Geek Challenge” is now open. The announcements were made at TechCrunch Disrupt, being held September 7-11 in San Francisco.

“The SAP HANA platform and its integration with Hadoop have married together real-time insights with extreme storage, solving one of the biggest problems with current big data solutions, a fragmented landscape of solutions that are difficult to connect together,” said Steve Lucas, president, Platform Solutions, SAP. “Our expanded big data strategy provides customers a single, integrated approach to combine enterprise data and additional information to employees and consumers, as well as improve business processes such as customer engagement, preventative maintenance and responsive supply chain.”

SAP Partners With Intel and Hortonworks to Redistribute Apache Hadoop
SAP has signed agreements to redistribute and support Intel Distribution Apache Hadoop and Hortonworks Data Platform to customers. Customers are envisioned to be able to purchase big data solutions supported by SAP and leveraging capabilities of market-leading technologies such as SAP HANA, Apache Hadoop, SAP Sybase IQ software, SAP Data Services software and SAP BusinessObjects business intelligence (BI) solutions. Integration with Apache Hadoop is part of SAP’s overall strategy to provide valuable insights across a continuum of data from the efficient storage of massive amounts of cold data, to petabyte-level storage of warm data to real-time and streaming data analysis.

“Enterprises today are looking for big data solutions that are simple and quick to implement that enable insight from all data in real time in a secure environment to improve business processes,” said Boyd David, vice president and general manager of Intel’s Datacenter Software Division. “With performance optimizations for Intel hardware as well as encryption and decryption improvements for better security, the integration of the Intel Distribution for Apache Hadoop with the SAP HANA platform provides enterprises with security and scalability without having to sacrifice performance.”

“By reselling the Hortonworks Data Platform, SAP can assure their customers they are deploying an SAP HANA and Hadoop architecture fully supported by SAP, while giving them the benefits of a fully open source Hadoop distribution,” said Shaun Connolly, vice president, Corporate Strategy, Hortonworks. “Hortonworks is committed to contributing all of its innovations back to the Apache project, ensuring that 100 percent of their Hadoop distribution is open source.”

Today’s news expands on existing partnerships SAP previously announced with Intel in February 2013. Additionally, SAP intends to continue to certify and support all the Apache Hadoop distributions as a part of the overall SAP partner program.

SAP Announces Demand Signal Management Application for Manufacturers
Manufacturers are striving to become demand-driven in order to be more responsive to their customers’ needs. To do so, manufacturers need visibility and access to downstream demand data and customer insight. • Capturing large volumes of downstream demand signals, i.e., a retailer’s point-of-sale data, along with market research data and consumer sentiment

  • Gaining valuable and real-time insights that shall help enable supply chain, sales and marketing functions to become more responsive and demand-driven

SAP Demand Signal Management is the first in a series of big data-enabled applications SAP intends to release before the end of 2013, including the SAP Fraud Management analytic application as well as the SAP Customer Engagement Intelligence solution, which includes the SAP Audience Discovery and Targeting, SAP Customer Value Intelligence, SAP Social Contact Intelligence and SAP Account Intelligence analytic applications. By deploying big data-enabled applications, enterprises can get to repeatable, measurable results much faster by infusing insights directly into day-to-day operations.

SAP Demand Signal Management shall combine captured data with internal business data to provide a holistic view of how customer demand and sales are materializing in real time. State-of-the-art analytics shall help visualize and analyze this data at any level of granularity as well as cross-navigate to SAP Business Suite applications.

SAP Taps Top Data Scientist Talent to Help Customers Drive Value from Big Data

The new Data Science organization at SAP brings together the top data scientist talent within the company by consolidating regional data science teams into a central organization closely aligned to the overall big data strategy. The role of the new organization within the company’s big data strategy includes:

  • Helping companies understand the link between the business imperative and disparate volumes of data

  • Uncovering insights to predict and shape the future with breakthrough data science innovation

  • Building proprietary customer solutions, extending existing solutions and optimizing big data-enabled SAP applications

  • Applying a portfolio of patents and intellectual property to SAP applications

“Every fantasy football participant is looking for innovative ways to gain the competitive edge. One example of innovation is applying more information and sophisticated analytics to improve the fantasy football experience to allow each player to make better, smarter and faster decisions on their teams.” said Cory Mummery, senior director, NFL Fantasy and Digital Media. “Easy-to-use resources such as the player comparison tool give users guided instructions to make the best possible game-day decisions by factoring in years of statistical performance and intangibles such as weather, injuries, game location, player rest and more.”

SAP Embraces iOS 7 to Improve and Simplify the Enterprise Experience

SAP_iOS7_shutterstock WALLDORF — With mobile playing a critical role in today’s best-run businesses, SAP AG today announced that the comprehensive suite of mobile solutions from SAP will support key iOS 7 features. SAP is committed to rapidly supporting customers running the latest mobile operating system from Apple with SAP Mobile Secure solutions, SAP Mobile Platform and mobile apps from SAP. Many of the new enterprise features within iOS 7 will benefit SAP customers eager to adopt corporate security requirements such as single sign-on, per-app VPN and app configuration. SAP Helps Redefine the Art of the Possible in Analytics

SAP_BI_4-1_shutterstock ANAHEIM — Unleashing the power of collective insight with its approach to analytics, SAP AG today announced the general availability of the latest release of SAP BusinessObjects business intelligence (BI) solutions. The announcement was made at the 2013 ASUG SAP BusinessObjects User Conference, being held September 9-11 in Anaheim, California.

Today, data, devices and the people who use them are more connected than ever. There is immense value to be unlocked by connecting this information, so called “dark data,” to the work people do every day enabling users to quickly discover what is happening and then act with the power of collective insight. SAP’s analytics vision is built around driving a near real-time connected experience across enterprise BI, agile visualization and advanced analytics. Analytic solutions from SAP help facilitate this discovery by connecting users, data, platforms and devices, allowing people to quickly and easily engage with their data, visualize what is happening and predict what comes next.

“Fairfax Water is responsible with providing safe, clean water to nearly 1.7 million people and we need reliable analysis systems to ensure people are getting the water they need each day,” said Tammy Powlas, project manager, Fairfax County Water Authority. “With the latest release of SAP BusinessObjects BI solutions, we have a simplified user interface and improved mobile worker access.”

Advancements in the 4.1 release of SAP BusinessObjects BI solutions include:

  • One suite for all insight: Unified and highly personalized solutions have the ability to deeply embed analytics to create custom experiences through new software development kits (SDKs) and application programming interfaces (APIs). Powerful visualizations empower users with industry-focused visualizations and special analytics. Faster and more accurate decisions are consumable from mobile devices through a single mobile application.

  • One standard for enterprise BI: The latest version delivers a professional-grade BI platform designed for any size business with SAP Crystal Server 2013 software and the Edge edition and enterprise edition of the 4.1 release of SAP BusinessObjects BI solutions. SAP BusinessObjects BI solutions are available for on-premise or on-demand deployment and support advanced multi-tenant management. The solutions give IT, business analysts and business users the ability to convert analysis on multiple devices as well as go from online to offline mode.

“The 4.1 release brings both enhancements and important integration features to the core BI product, improving capabilities for both SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse and long-time SAP BusinessObjects customers,” said Cindi Howson, founder of BI Scorecard and author of SAP BusinessObjects BI 4.0: The Complete Reference. “The most marked improvements are in mobile, dashboards, collaboration and support for big data sources.”

Bringing Agile Data Visualization to the Masses

SAP also recently announced a free personal edition of agile data discovery software, SAP Lumira as well as the “Data Geek Challenge.” Now generally available, the personal edition of SAP Lumira helps users analyze Microsoft Excel data by building interactive visualizations in a drag and drop environment in order to accelerate the decision-making process and uncover hidden business opportunities. The SAP Data Geek Challenge is a movement by the data community to discover and tell the most compelling stories with data.

“SAP is the market leader in analytics,” said Christian Rodatus, senior vice president and general manager, Analytics, SAP. “We have the depth, breadth and experience required to help our customers unlock the power of their dark data. Our experience means customers can expect a robust, professional-grade, enterprise BI platform. Both IT and business will benefit from the combined power of enterprise BI, agile visualization and advanced analytics solutions that will provide a synergy that is not possible today.”

A GPSC Senior Security Architect role is a business and technical leadership position. A Senior IT Security Architect is expected to have multi-discipline expertise and capabilities required to participate in problem definition, identify solutions and assist in problem solving. An IT security architect has a strong working knowledge of various architectural patterns, technologies, data and architecture management processes and isn’t ashamed to ask for help. A Senior IT Security Architect is capable of working without direct supervision to develop multi-layered solution architectures that comprehend and specify business, application, data and infrastructure designs. A Senior IT Security Architect will also contribute to the definition of GM IT technology direction, standards and roadmaps across one or more business or technical domains.

- Establishes software related security requirements and designs by evaluating project requirements and creating security artifacts and deliverables that comply with information security standards, and enterprise architectures.

- Coordinates the vulnerability analyses and risk assessments, studying system platform architecture, identifying integration issues and escalating to the Enterprise Security Architecture team when appropriate.

- Participates in efforts to improve the security of software development activities across assigned IT organization by promoting corporate standards, training and processes that result in secure software

IT Senior Development / Security Architect Job (Warren, MI, US)

IT Senior Development / Security Architect-INF0005611

About the General Motors Global Purchasing and Supply Chain IT team:

The innovation behind the GoMobile team is another example of how GM is breaking down the walls of conventional technological thinking. GM’s new GoMobile team is responsible for developing and delivering mobile solutions. Our industry-leading developers, engineers, and architects develop, test, and deploy GoMobile applications using Agile methodology.

About architecture role:

The GM Security Architecture Role was formalized in 2003 GMIT System Development Factories and then contractually defined for the 2006 3rd generation IT organization with Application Integration Management Domain, Application Integration Management Enterprise and Infrastructure Integration Management Global Service Contracts. In 2011 these contracts were dismantled and GM IT assumed responsibility for architecture activities at the enterprise, domain and infrastructure level. GM IT Security Architects participate in Strategic Global Programs (Business Cross Functional). Portfolio Level Programs and individual Projects that are initiated via an annual portfolio vetting activity. A specific business process may have significant portfolio funding during a calendar year or there may be little to no funding available. Predominately the annual funding model is an indication of level of activity needed to solution or support business initiatives. The GPSC secuirty architecture team strives to assign resources to maintain continuity of understanding within a business process but must balance that against actual work to be completed year over year.

- Assists with managing remediation plans for any security gaps reported in audits or recommended process improvements as related to the development or implementation of software.

Qualifications

The GPSC Application Portfolio consists of legacy mainframe IMS, CICS & DB2 application components, distributed Java and Microsoft application components running on Z/OS, Solaris, Linux and Windows operating systems, Relation Database Technologies (Oracle, Ingres, SQL Server). Additionally there are active SAP ERP deployments in various regions and business process areas. The integration platform consists of legacy flat file formats, JCAPs and MQ messaging, Services Oriented, direct database access and EDI. These integrations are predominately batch oriented but real time integrations are becoming a significant part of the GPSC business model. An IT Architect straddles past, present and future IT Solutions using the Reuse, Buy, Build analysis, works within GM enterprise initiatives and emerging technologies teams to solution IT systems to meet demanding global Logistics, Purchasing or Supply Chain business requirements.
