SAP Supports Philippines Typhoon Relief With Free International SMS in Critical Period

WALLDORF — To enable Filipinos with overseas family and friends to reach each other in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, SAP AG recently provided free international SMS services for Philippine telecom operators. Between November 11 and November 25, international SMS messages delivered through SMS interconnection network from SAP Mobile Services, a division of SAP, were at no cost for subscribers from Globe Telecom, Smart Communications and Sun Cellular.

As part of the company’s commitment to social responsibility in the Philippines, SAP Mobile Services partnered with the three Filipino operators in support of relief efforts to facilitate Filipino citizens’ overseas SMS communication during this critical period, enabling millions of Filipino citizens with overseas family and friends to reach each other more easily. SAP is a 10-year partner of the Philippines-based telecom operators, enabling them to provide international SMS services for the Filipino community, for which text message communication is a key aspect of daily life.

“In support of the Filipino community’s rebuilding and recovery, SAP is committed to contributing in a meaningful way by facilitating communication with overseas families and friends through unlimited international SMS services,” said Matthew Tonkin, vice president, SAP Mobile Services, Asia Pacific Japan. “We are dedicated to playing our part in support of relief efforts led by our longstanding mobile operator partners in the Philippines.”

“Globe keeps the lines of communications open between our Globe and TM subscribers in the Visayas region and their loved ones abroad,” said Gil Genio, executive vice president and COO for International and Business Markets, Globe Telecom. “Part of our corporate response to help is our enterprise-wide initiative, Bangon Pinoy, where we work closely with industry stakeholders such as SAP to ensure our customers who were affected by the disaster still have basic services and other forms of relief.”

Sun Cellular and Smart subscribers in the areas hit by Typhoon Haiyan continued sending free international SMS messages until November 25. A few days after the typhoon hit eastern Visayas, the two networks began offering free international SMS messages to aid typhoon victims in communicating with their friends and families abroad, and SAP joined the effort to more seamlessly facilitate this relief service.

“While we continue to restore and strengthen our communication services, we are also keen on working with various organizations to expedite rehabilitation and make it easier for those who intend to send help and reach out to the victims,” said Charles A. Lim, chief operating officer of Sun Cellular and executive vice president of Smart Communications. “We thank our international partners like SAP for helping to intensify our relief efforts for our typhoon-stricken countrymen in the Visaya.”

In addition to the international SMS partnership supporting local telecom operators, SAP Asia Pacific Japan and the global SAP network are actively aiding in relief efforts for Filipino citizens affected by Typhoon Haiyan, including immediate aid, employee volunteering, ongoing fundraising and other special initiatives alongside international and Philippines-based NGO partners. SAP’s corporate social responsibility philosophy underscores the company’s active and sustained social involvement in the communities where it operates, particularly in times of need, in line with its core commitment to improving people’s lives.

SAP Leads Burgeoning Mobile Enterprise Application Development Platform Market

SAP_IDC-madp_shutterstock

WALLDORF — With the mobile enterprise application development platform market poised to flourish over the next five years, IT market research advisory firm IDC has recognized SAP AG as the market share leader by revenue in its latest market share analysis. The “Worldwide Mobile Enterprise Application Development Platform 2013–2017 Forecast and 2012 Vendor Shares” report highlights SAP Mobile Platform as capturing nearly 49 percent of the mobile enterprise application development platform (enterprise MADP) market with the nearest competitor having less than 5.8 percent share in 2012.i

According to IDC, “driven by major technology trends in consumer and enterprise markets, the Enterprise MADP software market is in a period of rapid growth. In 2012, IDC believed the total market reached a size of $938.5 million dollars. By 2017, the market will experience a 38.7 percent CAGR to reach $4.8 billion.”

“In 2013, organizations are truly beginning to embrace enterprise mobility and are eager to build applications that improve customer engagement and employee productivity,” said Stacy Crook, research director, Mobile Enterprise Research, IDC. “In our most recent mobile enterprise survey, we found that the majority of companies today are or plan to invest in some kind of mobile application development platform, and that the apps they are building represent a broad mix of employee, customer and partner facing apps. While there is no one size fits all approach to mobile application development, we are seeing a growing number of organizations choose to buy a comprehensive mobile enterprise application development platform that includes front end, middleware and integration components.”

As referenced in this market study, IDC believes key defining elements of SAP Mobile Platform include:

  • Business to consumer applications that can be connected to any SAP or non-SAP data sources, with mobile platform support for iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Windows, Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 devices

  • Version 3.0, which focuses on platform extensibility and developer productivity by supporting a greater range of open standards and open source technologies, such as OData, REST APIs, WebSockets, OSGi, HTML5 and Apache Cordova, and by offering common SDKs across different application architectures, including a WYSIWYG development environment for HTML5 apps

  • Analytics supported by the underlying SAP HANA platform, 3D visualization and support for third-party libraries to implement advanced capabilities such as augmented reality

  • A cloud version powered by the SAP HANA Cloud Platform

This latest distinction follows SAP’s leadership for the 12th consecutive year in IDC’s “Worldwide Mobile Enterprise Management Software 2013 – 2017 Forecast and 2012 Vendor Shares” reportii, which highlights the SAP Afaria mobile device management solution as holding 14 percent market share.

“Our continued mobile leadership designations from the industry’s top analyst firms demonstrate SAP’s vision and innovation are directly in line with customer needs,” said Anthony Reynolds, senior vice president, Worldwide Mobile Sales and Solutions, SAP. “From apps to cloud to Big Data and analytics, mobile is embedded in everything we do. Our unmatched mobile platform and broad expertise across business and consumer focused mobile applications puts us in the best position to serve as a strategic partner to our customers. We develop strong business cases backed by global-class technology for mobile implementations with consideration to their broader and future needs.”

Bill McDermott on CNBC: Innovating in China, for China

China-SAPPHIRE_CNBC-McDermott SAP Co-CEO Bill McDermott spoke to CNBC about innovation in China, explaining that in order to grow there, a company has to innovate in China, for China, and adopt the country as a “second home.” SAP has created 6,000 development jobs and 60,000 other ecosystem jobs. Along with being part of the community, having a China cloud is vital to success.

In response to a question about why SAP is performing better in China than Cisco and IBM, McDermott explained, “We’re a pure play business software company. We didn’t stray. We didn’t go into hardware. We knew that was a bad move.” He also cited the factors of innovation — 80 percent of net-new sales that SAP achieves today come from businesses it was not in three years ago — and “the greatest database in the world,” SAP HANA.

SAP to Interconnect Rich Communication Services for Mobile Operators

Photo: Shutterstock

Photo: Shutterstock

WALLDORF — As consumers seek to communicate better and further through mobile devices, SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) today announced a new cloud-based service that aims to simplify interconnecting rich communication services (RCS), such as instant messaging, video and file sharing, for mobile operators. With more than 200 LTE network deployments since 2010i, the issue of isolated mobile networks is becoming more prevalent. SAP Mobile Services, a division of SAP, is the first to announce a standards-compliant IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) for IP-based services, including RCS and Voice over LTE (VoLTE), intended to allow consumers to communicate beyond traditional voice and messaging services across any device, network and geography.

“The combination of IPX and RCS allows consumers to freely communicate and collaborate via the latest innovations surrounding instant messaging, video and file sharing,” said Steve Heap, CTO, HOT TELECOM. “According to the GSMA, RCS adoption is picking up pace with deployments in 11 countries, supported by 17 operators. This figure is expected to grow to 85 operators by 2015. The next step in the evolution of RCS is about interconnecting operators over IPX to expand the consumer base. Regardless of network type, operators need to interoperate globally to offer quality services regardless of subscriber location. SAP is first to come up with a standards-based approach that aims to push RCS adoption.”

The forthcoming IMS hub from SAP Mobile Services is intended to be the latest cloud-based service hub running over the SAP IPX 365 mobile service, along with the SAP Rich Communication Services 365 (SAP RCS 365) mobile service. According to “Navigating Complexity: The Quest for True IPX” [PDF,] a study released by SAP in conjunction with TelecomAsia, more than half (52 percent) of operators surveyed report their plan to launch RCS in the next three years and close to 60 percent would run hosted RCS.

“As today’s mobile consumers persistently seek out the latest innovation and best possible user experience, operators must support cutting edge IP-based services to remain competitive,” said John Sims, global head of Telecom and president of SAP Mobile Services. This requires operators to interconnect globally to ensure ubiquitous reach to end users while maintaining a high quality of service. We deliver economies of scale and efficiencies through cloud-based services and our approach is to add new network services through our IPX cloud to deliver higher value to mobile operators. SAP Mobile Services provides an unmatched partner footprint of operators around the world and breakthrough new rich communication services in the cloud powered by an unrivaled, standards-based infrastructure. Now we are enabling operators to test RCS and VoLTE interconnection through the IMS hub.”

SAP Mobile Services is a global leader in mobile interconnection and mobile consumer engagement services. It provides mobile operators with unparalleled capabilities in global messaging interconnect, data roaming and an array of IPX-based services and enables enterprises to engage with their consumers through innovative mobile marketing and communication solutions. SAP Mobile Services helps businesses process 1.8 billion messages per day, reaching more than 990 operators and 6.1 billion subscribers across 210 countries.

SAP Helps Mobitel Deliver Seamless 3G and 4G-LTE Roaming to Customers

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — SAP AG today announced that Sri Lanka’s national mobile service provider, Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, has chosen IPX services from SAP Mobile Services, a division of SAP, to deliver a superior 3G and 4G-LTE roaming experience to customers. Through this agreement, Mobitel can interconnect with other mobile service providers around the globe to deliver an enhanced roaming experience over the IPX network from SAP. Mobitel chose SAP Mobile Services due to its strong and growing base of LTE operators.

“With the advent of 3G and 4G-LTE services, there has been an exponential growth in the volume of data being consumed over mobile networks,” said Nalin Perera, senior general manager of Marketing, Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel. “Today customers expect the same level of data connectivity when at home and abroad. SAP’s IPX network will connect us to a larger community of service providers. This will help us mutually enhance our customers’ mobile roaming experience by allowing them to access data over these networks while roaming and vice-versa.”

South Asia is one of the fastest growing emerging markets and with the mobile phone as the primary source of communication and information, mobile data use is both rising and key for the region’s development. The South Asian market will benefit from SAP’s extensive community of operators, enabling mobile operators such as Mobitel to expand their international reach as soon as they become part of the company’s global LTE roaming community.

“Sri Lanka’s telecommunications industry, especially its mobile telephony sector, is one of the more evolved in the region, offering 4G-LTE services ahead of its regional peers,” said Matthew Tonkin, vice president, IPX, SAP Mobile Services. “Having worked with Mobitel since 2004, we welcome them into our global LTE roaming community. We remain committed to expanding this community even further and driving innovation that provides the highest value to mobile operators.”

Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, the country’s national mobile service provider, is a fully-owned subsidiary of Sri Lanka Telecom. The company offers mobile telephony services, high-speed broadband, enterprise solutions, IDD services and a host of value-added services. Mobitel’s coverage spans the entire island, with international roaming available in more than 400 networks worldwide and a customer base exceeding 4 million.

SAP Mobile Services is the global leader in mobile interconnection and mobile consumer engagement services. It provides mobile operators with unparalleled capabilities in global messaging interconnect, data roaming and an array of IPX-based services and enables enterprises to engage with their consumers through innovative mobile marketing and communication solutions. SAP Mobile Services processes 1.8 billion messages per day, reaching more than 990 operators and 6.1 billion subscribers across 210 countries.

Holistic Approach of SAP Urban Matters Program Delivers Sustainability Results for Cape Town

SAP-Cape-Town_shutterstock

Photo: Shutterstock

CAPE TOWN — SAP AG today highlighted its holistic approach to urban sustainability during an SAP Urban Matters initiative event in Cape Town, South Africa. More than a decade after its first implementation, the City of Cape Town’s deployment of SAP software demonstrates that sustainability efforts extend beyond environmental concerns and are rooted in good governance. Deep industry experience has shaped the SAP Urban Matters program, which recognizes that improving liveability, transforming government and nurturing local economies are key foundations for long-term sustainable success.

Cape Town chose the enterprise resource planning (ERP) application SAP ERP following a local government amalgamation in 2000 that brought several municipalities together to form a consolidated City of Cape Town. Facing this management challenge, city leaders and managers worked with SAP to get full visibility into the once-fragmented workforce. Improving its financial management was the first step in addressing socioeconomic challenges. In 2003, within three years of implementation, the application had paid for itself through improved revenue collection. With a strengthened financial and management foundation in place, Cape Town has the resources to pursue many sustainability goals.

One such goal was maximizing utility revenues in order to provide services to genuinely needy citizens. Fair and improved utility tariff enforcement required the ability to distinguish between ratepayers who did not have the means to pay versus those who simply would not. In 2012, Cape Town deployed SAP Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Integration for Utilities software for some of its large power users. The project enables the City to read meters on demand while integrating smart meters and their processes in the back office.

Improved administrative performance has allowed the City of Cape Town to deliver superior customer service to all citizens, in turn raising civic expectations, faith in government and engagement of residents that were underserved prior to South Africa’s transition to full democracy in 1994. Citizens can now make use of upgraded administrative tools in all three locally prominent languages — Afrikaans, English and Xhosa — and can also make payments toward their municipal accounts at any bank across the City, via both Internet and many third-party vendors. These practical improvements have made Cape Town the top-rated deliverer of municipal services in South Africa.i With stronger finances, better citizen engagement, and more credibility as an organization, the City of Cape Town is poised to tackle many sustainability challenges.

Today’s event featured Patricia DeLille, Mayor of the City of Cape Town; Andre Stelzner, CIO of the City of Cape Town; as well as a number of global and regional experts on managing urbanization. While drawing on the experiences of cities worldwide, the discussion focused on the approaches taken by African cities as they manage rapid economic growth, surging populations, rising citizen expectations and larger municipal workforces.

“With the rapid growth of cities around the world and especially in Africa, citizens expect leaders to address urgent global issues that affect all urban populations,” said Sean O’Brien, global vice president, Urban Matters and Security, SAP. “Mayors and their teams need the best possible tools to directly tackle livability, governance and economic challenges. This is why SAP takes a holistic approach to urban sustainability, incorporating governance, public security, the environment and citizen engagement.”

SAP Recognized as a Market Leader by Gartner, Inc. in Operational Database Management Systems Magic Quadrant

SAP_MQ_DBMS_shutterstock

WALLDORF — SAP AG today announced that it has been positioned by Gartner, Inc. in the Leaders Quadrant of the “Magic Quadrant for Operational Database Management Systems,” i based on the evaluation of the SAP HANA platform, SAP Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (SAP Sybase ASE) and the SAP Sybase SQL Anywhere suite. SAP is recognized as a market leader for both its “ability to execute” and “completeness of vision.”

According to the Gartner report, “[t]he Leaders quadrant generally contains the vendors that demonstrate the greatest degree of support for a broad range of operational applications based on a broad range of data types and large numbers of concurrent users. These vendors demonstrate consistent customer satisfaction and strong customer support. These vendors also have the greatest longevity in the market and have built a wide partner ecosystem for their products. Hence, the Leaders generally have the lowest risk for their customers in the areas of performance, scalability, reliability and support. As the market demands change, so the Leaders demonstrate strong vision in support of not only the needs of the current market but also of new and emerging trends. Finally, the messaging, product R&D and delivery are in line with the market today and with new trends in both DBMS software technology and hardware technology.”

“Customers are increasingly turning to SAP for scalable, reliable and resilient operational data management solutions to achieve their critical goals today while advancing capabilities well into the future,” said Dan Lahl, vice president, Product Marketing, SAP. “SAP is committed to providing world-class intelligent operational database solutions that deliver outstanding performance, scalability and reliability for the long term. We believe this recognition from Gartner further affirms our continued momentum, direction and leadership in this space.”

SAP HANA and SAP Sybase ASE are at the core of the company’s data management vision and momentum. SAP HANA was introduced to the market two years ago and has since gained more than 2,200 enterprise customers and more than 1,000 startups and independent software vendors (ISVs). More than 1,000 new customers have chosen SAP Sybase ASE in the past 18 months. And when paired with SAP Business Suite software, SAP Sybase ASE has achieved substantial momentum with rapid customer adoption in that time. SAP has also supplied a combined solution of SAP HANA and SAP Sybase ASE to many customers on the Global 1000 list, helping large organizations move to SAP Business Suite and custom applications, scale to new transaction levels and achieve critical, in-the-moment decision-making.

Largest Dutch Insurance Provider Achmea Addresses Global Regulatory Issues With SAP

Photo: Shutterstock

Photo: Shutterstock

WALLDORF — SAP AG today announced that Achmea, the largest insurance group in the Netherlands, is among the first to choose SAP Insurance Analyzer analytic applications to address international accounting and regulatory issues.

New standards in financial reporting and risk management pose challenges for the insurance industry, especially with the implementation of the new accounting rules for insurance contracts (IFRS4) and the Solvency II standard model. With SAP Insurance Analyzer, Achmea will adapt an integrated standard model in order to address these regulations while improving data management and data quality.

Based in the Netherlands, Achmea offers life and non-life insurance and health and banking products and services in the region. Similar to any organization that operates on a global scale, the company needs to comply with all regulations, including IFRS4 and Solvency II. Due to its complex application infrastructure with many legacy policy and claims applications, there is a need to implement an integrated platform that streamlines the collection of all data from several different legacy systems and to process them for the regulatory organizations. Achmea plans to deploy SAP Insurance Analyzer over the next two years and will commence the implementation with the IFRS4 regulation.

“The protection of policyholders and the promotion of fair and stable markets have driven the evolution of regulations for the global insurance industry,” said René Wissing, head of Enterprise Architecture, Achmea. “With the expanded needs for compliance, a solid integrated platform such as SAP Insurance Analyzer is critical in managing and streamlining the process and analyzing the enormous amount of data for our organization. SAP will allow us to further solidify those data management capabilities.”

With SAP Insurance Analyzer, Achmea can take an integrated approach to finance and risk management, addressing changes in the scope and timing of new rules and leveraging data and processes for multiple accounting standards and risk approaches. Features and benefits of the analytic applications include:

  • Helping reduce complexity and costs as the deployment integrates legacy applications

  • Offering a central platform to manage IFRS4 Phase II and Solvency II simultaneously

  • Helping minimize implementation risk by providing standardized business content on a platform for integrated finance and risk management

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim to Improve Player and Team Performance With SAP HANA

SINSHEIM — SAP AG today announced an expansion of its relationship with the German Bundesliga football club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim to include SAP solutions leveraging Big Data and Internet of Things innovations that help analyze player activity data. With innovative training and game evaluations based on data collected from wearable sensors and analyzed in SAP HANA, the club can gain real-time insight into player and team playing behavior, which can help improve performance. The announcement was made at the SAP Forum for Sports and Entertainment, being held November 11 in Sinsheim, Germany.

“SAP is a long-standing partner, and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim has used software by SAP intensively and successfully for many years,” said Peter Rettig, CEO, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. “With this new development, we are taking our performance to the next level. SAP technology will give us an immediate advantage over our competition.”

To support the analysis of player performance, SAP and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim are developing a real-time player analysis solution based on sensor data and in-memory geospatial processing of SAP HANA. Placing special sensors in shin guards, clothing and the ball itself, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim collects an enormous amount of actionable data from training, which is stored, processed and analyzed by using SAP HANA. Based on these analyses, trainers are developing new ways to improve the players’ game. Capability characteristics, such as acceleration, speed and ball contacts are calculated in real time for individual players or the whole team and visualized via an easily configurable user interface. This data is used to personalize training to strategically target the strengths and weaknesses of each player and help create the most effective training plan possible. For instance, spatial analytics can be applied to individual and team movement profiles in order to track distances, speed averages and ball possession as well as player tendencies. The information can also be used to help reduce the risk of injury and ultimately boost levels of play.

“Whether in the regional or the top league in German football, we have supported TSG 1899 Hoffenheim as a technology partner,” said Gerd Oswald, member of the Executive Board of SAP AG, Scale, Quality & Support. “The real-time analysis of player and team performance based on SAP HANA will help not only to elevate levels of play, but provide foresight to customize trainings accordingly and in a way not previously possible.”

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim has been using innovative software from SAP for many years, including the enterprise resource planning (ERP) application SAP ERP for financial accounting, merchandising and e-commerce. The club also plans to implement SAP Event Ticketing software and intends to migrate to SAP Business Suite software powered by SAP HANA and the SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud service.

The SAP for Sports & Entertainment solution portfolio helps the industry run better, from fans and athletes to teams and leagues. For more information, visit the SAP Newsroom.

Import Mode: Downtime-Minimized

Due to the size and extent of OCS packages (Support Packages, Add-On Installation Packages, and Add-On Upgrades), importing packages entails lengthy system downtime. The system is not restarted when Support Packages are imported. However, the system should not be used productively during the import process. This restriction is often a disadvantage in production systems.

To reduce downtime when importing Support Packages, import mode downtime-minimized has been developed. This allows you to import most objects while the system is in production operation. These objects are the program code and program texts. This new procedure can reduce downtime considerably if the package contains a large proportion of program code and program texts. (This proportion is around 70-80% in SAP_BASIS and SAP_APPL Support Packages.)

In import mode downtime-minimized, the objects are imported into the database in an inactive state, where they are largely ‘invisible’ to the system. The system can still be used productively.

The new procedure contains some actions (activation of the inactive objects) and organizational steps that were not in the old procedure. This lengthens the duration of the import process. The efficiency or time saved in the non-production phase over the conventional procedure partly depends on the proportion of inactively imported objects in the total imported data. The duration of other actions performed in downtime (such as after-import methods or XPRAs) also contributes to the time saved.

Note Note

Import the packages in queues that are as large as possible (ideally in a single queue).

In some cases, it is not possible to import Support Packages in a queue using Support Package Manager. Read the relevant SAP Note for known problems in your release. To find out the number of the SAP Note in question, see composite 97620.

End of the note.

Use import mode downtime-minimized:

  • In production systems

  • In test systems, if you want to test the expected downtime of the production system

During the import, you must treat the systems like production systems (make no manual changes to program objects, no parallel imports from other transport requests).

Do not use import mode downtime-minimized:

  • In development systems, or in systems where frequent imports are made (QA or test systems)

The consistency of the system cannot be guaranteed during the import if manual changes are made to program objects at the same time, or if other transport requests are imported.

  • To import Support Packages into BBP/CRM systems

The additional pre- and post-import steps in the special BBP/CRM Support Package Manager ensure that the whole import can be performed effectively during downtime.

  • To import Preconfigured Systems (SAP Best Practices) with Add-On Installation Tool

Prerequisites

Temporary free space is required in the database, since the inactive objects exist in the database alongside the active versions.

A defined process that is triggered by Support Package Manager or Add-On Installation Tool activates the objects later. However, since the inactive objects are not completely isolated from the system, parallel changes might cause unwanted activation and inconsistencies in the system.

Make sure of the following during the import:

  • You have enough free space in the database.

    Recommendation Recommendation

We recommend around 1.5 times the size of the packages that you are importing.

    Database Tablespaces/Dbspaces/Volumes Affected
    Oracle

    IBM DB2

    PSAPES <REL>D

    PSAPES <REL>I

    Informixpsapes <REL>
MaxDBIf necessary, create a new volume to extend the database (see also 34690).

    End of the recommendation.

  • No other transport requests are imported at the same time.

  • The development environment is not being used productively.

Milk and SAP HANA: Creating Professional Lives

SAP-TV_India-Milk

India’s milk producers face hard working conditions every day. Each morning they deliver their fresh milk to a nearby cooperative and face a long procedure of quality checks and protocol, after which special secretaries register the supply in one of the society banks. The supply chain of fresh products in India can be long and slow; producers are not paid until all measurements and checks have been done. SAP HANA enables cooperatives to shorten processes and increase transparency. Data can be entered and processed in real time, improving the lives of milk farmers across India. SAP Survey Finds Retailers “Don’t Know Where New Skilled Managers Will Come From, Don’t See Required Skills Reflected in the Current Talent Pool”

WALLDORF — Finding employees with the right functional competencies continues to be a challenge for retailers according to a recent survey by SAP AG. In an environment where the ability to understand and manage technology and data is increasingly in demand, retailers are worried about filling management positions with employees that have the strategic skill sets needed.

Retailers see a need for functional competencies leaning toward technology and data skills, even more than general business and people management. But the survey revealed that 84 percent of retailers are worried that it will be challenging to find employees with these skills. Exacerbating the problem is the overall hiring trend: 93 percent of survey respondents said hiring will not decrease over the next two to three years.

When asked to specify which skills are in high demand, retailers indicated they are focused on filling management-level roles that have a strategic impact on the business, such as:

  • Understanding and applying business analytics and Big Data in retail (80 percent)

  • Optimizing the retail business for omni-channel commerce (72 percent)

  • Analyzing consumer buying behavior for improved operations (55 percent)

Within these functional competencies, 97 percent of the retailers surveyed are aware of the challenge of finding and training employees for new skill sets. Retailers plan to approach this challenge using a mix of activities. The majority (75 percent) plan to hire new people from outside the organization to fill these roles, if they can find them. More than half said they plan to use in-house educational resources or organically develop new skills through experience and training. And 53 percent plan to offer external education opportunities to current employees to improve skills.

Other skills of note that are top of mind for retailers include mobile commerce management (50 percent), merchandise buying/planning (37 percent) and digital and social branding skills (37 percent).

SAP surveyed 76 retail managers from top-tier retail brands at the SAP Retail Forum North America, held last month in Dallas, Texas, and attended by retailers including Zappos, PGA Tour Superstore, Luxottica, eBay, Sports Basement and Shane Company.
