New Study Sponsored by SuccessFactors Highlights Growing Need for HR Strategies to Fit Diverse, Younger Global Workforces

1-22-2014 5-18-06 PM WALLDORF — Business growth depends on attracting and retaining a workforce with globally diverse values and demographics, according to a new study sponsored by SuccessFactors, an SAP AG company and leading provider of cloud-based HCM software. With diversity increasingly seen as a strategic business advantage, human resources (HR) executives agree that companies must embrace multicultural and multigenerational needs to meet ongoing recruitment and retention goals. The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) surveyed 228 HR executives around the globe to learn about the challenges of an increasingly diverse workforce, millennials and their strategies for making the most of these rapid industry changes. The findings were compiled in a new study, titled “Values-based diversity: The challenges and strengths of many.” Key findings of the study include:

  • 1-22-2014 5-22-58 PM Eighty-two percent of executives agree that a strategic approach to managing diversity can help access a rich talent pool.

  • The integration of millennial-generation employees in the workforce is viewed as a significant diversity challenge. Eighty percent believe strategic changes are needed to accommodate younger employees in the workforce.

  • Offering learning and career-development opportunities is a key strategy for managing a diverse workforce. Forty-seven percent are supporting policy initiatives such as mentoring in order to engage diverse talent.

Different global diversity issues highlight why HR strategies must meet distinct regional needs. The top global markets that present the most difficult challenges for managing a diverse workforce include:

  • Generational issues: Asia-Pacific (29 percent), North America (23 percent), Africa (15 percent), Western Europe (14 percent)

  • Cultural/religious issues: Middle East (51 percent), Asia Pacific (20 percent), Africa (14 percent)

  • Language issues: Asia-Pacific (43 percent), Africa (17 percent), Latin America (12 percent)

  • Gender issues: Middle East (46 percent), Asia-Pacific (18 percent), Africa (13 percent)

  • Education and training issues: Africa (45 percent), Asia-Pacific (18 percent), North America (12 percent), Latin America (10 percent)

HR executives are investing in a variety of strategies to provide employees with an engaging work experience, including mentoring new and high-potential employees (47 percent); exposing high-potential employees to diverse business situations (45 percent); and providing flexible working arrangements (43 percent). Key to successful implementations of these strategies is the technology to enable them. Solutions include a global system of workforce data to provide a single system of record, cloud delivery options to innovate quickly and collaboration tools help companies manage their diverse workforce. The top tools are: core HR / HRiS systems (35 percent); eLearning (31 percent); videoconferencing (25 percent); cloud-based collaboration tools (21 percent); and enterprise social networks (20 percent).

“We all know that the business landscape will look dramatically different in coming decades,” said Anka Wittenberg chief diversity and inclusion officer, SAP. “By embracing people’s differences, we can not only make SAP a better place to work, but spark our innovation, better serve our customers, and gain competitive advantage. In addition, we can support broader societal change.”

“Given the increasing diversity in today’s workforce, both demographically and in terms of values, HR executives must create an environment that allows employees to express themselves individually while maximizing their work skills,” said Gilda Stahl, senior editor, the Economist Intelligence Unit. “The EIU survey demonstrates that executives in every region recognize the scope of this challenge and understand that support at the most senior levels will be required to adjust and productively move forward.”

New Retail Mobile Apps from SAP Transform the In-Store Shopping Experience

SAP_mobile-retail_NRF_shutterstock

NEW YORK — SAP AG today announced the launch of SAP Shopper Experience a personalized and engaging retail mobile app that transforms the entire consumer shopping experience with social media sharing, loyalty programs and a self-payment system for shoppers. SAP also released the latest version of the SAP Retail Store Ops Associate mobile app, which allows store associates to execute core merchandising, inventory and customer service functions directly from the shop floor without leaving a consumer’s side. The announcement was made at the NRF 103rd Annual Convention and EXPO, being held January 12-15 at the Javits Convention Center in New York City.

Consumers are increasingly reaching for their mobile devices to research products, compare prices and get recommendations; this behavior has significantly impacted the retail industry. According to Retail Systems Research*, 80 percent of retailers believe their store results will continue to erode unless they incorporate technology as part of the store experience. To help prevent the showrooming trend, retailers identified the top two opportunities: 60 percent cited focusing on a more convenient customer experience and 48 percent cited bringing more digital and online experiences to store.

With SAP Shopper Experience, retailers can offer consumers the ability to create collaborative shopping lists, redeem unique offers specific to a particular store and manage loyalty accounts. For consumers, the app enables shoppers to self-scan merchandise and pay, as well as share offers with friends on Facebook — all from their mobile device while shopping in the store. The app is customizable to a retailer’s unique brand identity. After linking a loyalty account, consumers are immediately recognized and can review points, status levels and upcoming rewards. They can plan and easily collaborate with family members on shopping lists and locate the nearest store. Once they check into the store, shoppers receive personalized, local offers that they can share with friends. While shopping, consumers can scan items to research product details and add items to their mobile shopping cart. Consumers can also instantly transfer their cart to the point of sale (POS) and avoid the check-out line by paying directly from their mobile device.

In addition to a higher level of consumer engagement and higher conversion rates from integrated mobile offers, retailers benefit by providing self-service features that help reduce stores’ operational costs. SAP Shopper Experience is available on Android and iOS devices.

To further enhance the in-store experience, SAP also released the latest version of SAP Retail Ops Associate. New updates include the ability to order products, perform in-store markdowns, make inventory corrections and transfers, post receiving from vendors and distribution centers and provide access to product history and information. Store associates can manage consumer requests with a few swipes, helping to boost sales, enhance consumer loyalty and optimize inventory accuracy and replenishment. SAP Retail Ops Associate is currently available on iOS devices.

“Now more than ever it’s essential for us to provide our customers with the best in-store experience,” said Peter Bucher, head of IT for Retail Stores for Migros, Switzerland’s largest retailer. “To do so, we’ve armed some of our employees with SAP Retail Store Ops Associate, an intuitive, easy-to-use app that lets them access vital and up-to-date product, availability and pricing information instantaneously from the store floor.”For more information, including additional news from NRF, visit the SAP Newsroom. SAP Brings Best Practices Back Into Fashion

NEW YORK — SAP AG today announced plans to collaborate with key customers to better meet the challenges faced by apparel, footwear and accessory companies. Working with adidas, Luxottica and Tommy Hilfiger, SAP envisions bringing a new fashion solution to the marketplace that will better enable fashion brands to manufacture their products and sell them to retailers and consumers using one single, vertical solution. The announcement was made at the NRF 103rd Annual Convention and EXPO, being held January 12-15 at the Javits Convention Center in New York City.

Fashion companies strive to be customer-centric by using best practices and Big Data in a cross-channel vertical environment. Wholesalers and manufacturers that run retail stores and have direct-to-consumer (D2C) Web channels may keep inventories in disintegrated silos, leading to issues in stock and distribution decisions. It can also mean new styles are not brought to market quickly enough, and moving into new markets and channels is cumbersome and time-consuming. The planned single Big Data-enabled solution is envisioned to give fashion companies a unified view of inventory. And with the power of in-memory computing, large data volumes can be quickly analyzed for a fast and accurate overview of products. This is expected to save both time and money across operations.

The collaboration aims to enable retailers to meet these challenges and manage the vertical, omni-channel business processes across one Big Data system landscape for greater efficiency, quicker time to market and better inventory control, so retailers can grow globally.

“With this development, we plan to help our fashion customers become truly vertical,” said Lori Mitchell-Keller, global head, Industry Business Unit Retail, SAP. “As a result of this planned collaboration, we aim to bring the processes for vertical fashion wholesale, manufacturing and retail into one system using the power of our proven , Big Data-enabled business suite on SAP HANA.”

“Our deep and innovative partnership with SAP will enable us to bring our global wholesale and retail businesses closer together,” said Jan Brecht, Group CIO, adidas.

“We’re focused on taking our retail, wholesale and manufacturing businesses to a new level with our SAP collaboration,” said Dario Scagliotti, Group CIO, Luxottica. “The future looks very bright for our operations.”

“Our innovation with SAP is intended to create a new single platform for speed and growth across our multiple businesses and distribution channels,” said Ludo Onnink, COO, Tommy Hilfiger. “We look forward to using these best practices to run faster than ever before.”

SAP will host a number of invite-only events with retailers and SAP executives at NRF, including a global media reception and a customer roundtable luncheon. For more information, including additional news from NRF, visit the SAP Newsroom. Follow SAP on Twitter at @sapnews.
