BARCELONA — SAP AG today announced that it has signed an agreement with STC, the largest telecommunication services provider in the Middle East and North Africa, to implement SAP solutions for network life-cycle management (NLM) to improve network operations. This will enable the company to markedly improve customer service as a result of increased end-to-end visibility for capital projects and assets, as well as enhanced project oversight and collaboration. SAP solutions will also maintain the high quality of STC’s IT infrastructure.

“With SAP solutions, we can create close links between the logistical and financial sides of our network operations, integrating the entire spectrum of planning and realizing tasks — from demand and supply planning to investment and project management, inventory management and asset accounting,” said Dr. Khalid bin Hussain Al-Bayari, senior vice president for Technology and Operations, STC. “Enabling effective collaboration within and beyond the company will help optimize the way we manage the network infrastructure, streamlining and innovating for better-run, more cost-effective operations and investments.”

SAP solutions will offer STC visibility into equipment and assets, including multifaceted historical details at every step of the life cycle. The solutions are particularly influential in both reducing and optimizing costs related to build and repair, as well as helping increase the productivity of field workers.

“The Saudi telecommunications sector is vibrant and fast-moving, and quality of data underpins the innovations and decisions that can make a genuine competitive difference,” said Ahmed Al-Faifi, managing director, SAP Saudi Arabia. “STC has big plans in this respect, and by offering improved visibility into its assets, SAP solutions will enable the company to adapt and succeed in a hugely effective manner.”

Mobile Messaging Security from SAP Helps Prevent Cross-Operator Spam Attacks

Photo: Shutterstock

Photo: Shutterstock

BARCELONA — With spam attacks targeted at mobile devices on the rise, SAP AG is employing its flagship SMS interworking service to protect against cross-operator attacks. The company today announced that in the last two months, new anti-spam capabilities within the SAP SMS 365 mobile service have detected and eliminated nearly 18 million attempted spam and grey route messages. The announcement was made at Mobile World Congress 2014, being held February 24-27 in Barcelona, Spain.

In January 2014, SAP SMS 365 blocked a major credit card phishing attack targeting several U.S. operators. By preventing the SMS associated with the attack from ever reaching subscribers, SAP prevented what could have been a major wave of credit card fraud.

To enhance its ability to fight spam and other unwanted SMS traffic, Cloudmark’s mobile security product, Cloudmark Security Platform, has been integrated into SAP SMS 365. With Cloudmark Security Platform, SAP SMS 365 offers messaging security protection that automatically detects and mitigates messaging abuse and threats. By combining forces, SAP and Cloudmark have more than doubled real-time spam blocking capabilities of SAP SMS 365 when compared to legacy anti-spam solutions. As a result, across the SAP SMS 365 network consumers have received far fewer unwanted mobile messages and mobile network operators have achieved savings from international termination fees and subscriber customer service costs typically incurred to resolve spam-related issues.

“Mobile spam has escalated into a significant threat to mobile operators and consumers alike,” said William Dudley, group director, Global Product Strategy & Solutions, SAP Mobile Services. “With a massive global reach of more than 3 billion individuals, SMS has become the last frontier for spammers and unscrupulous marketers. We are currently blocking more than 1 million spam messages per day for only a subset of our customers and this number will dramatically increase as we expand the capability to our entire customer footprint. We understand that guarding against malicious mobile messaging traffic is essential to protecting the security of our customers which is why we have implemented anti-spam capabilities that rank among the best in the industry.”

The new anti-spam capability of SAP SMS 365 is a value-added service that SAP has implemented for a significant portion of U.S. mobile operators and some operators around the world. Continued rollout of the service will happen throughout 2014 with the goal of providing all mobile operator customers worldwide with more reliable traffic patterns and protection against incoming SMS spam and grey route messages.

SAP Mobile Services is a global leader in mobile interconnection and mobile consumer engagement services. It provides mobile operators with unparalleled capabilities in global messaging interconnect, data roaming and an array of IPX-based services and enables enterprises to engage with their consumers through innovative mobile marketing and engagement solutions. SAP Mobile Services helps businesses process 1.8 billion messages per day, reaching more than 1,000 operators and 6.1 billion subscribers across 210 countries.

Kevin Gilroy Named as One of CRN’s 50 Most Influential Channel Chiefs

Gilroy Kevin Gilroy, senior vice president of Global Indirect Channels at SAP, has been recognized on the CRN 2014 Channel Chiefs list and has been named as one of this year’s 50 Most Influential. The prestigious Channel Chiefs list showcases those executives directly responsible for driving channel sales and growth within their organization, while evangelizing the importance of the channel throughout the entire IT industry. The 50 Most Influential Channel Chiefs list recognizes an elite subset of these channel executives based on their rank, channel savvy, ability to drive channel strategy within their own organization, and external impact on the channel at large.

CRN Channel Chiefs were selected by the CRN editorial team based on channel experience, program innovations, channel-driven revenue, and public support for the importance of IT channel sales.

As noted in the article, “While SAP was traditionally known for selling big ERP systems to big companies, the vendor has expanded deep into SMB markets in recent years – most of that through the channel. Under Gilroy, SAP has doubled the number of partners in its Global VAR Program (the company has some 13,000 partner worldwide) with channel revenue growing 40 percent annually. And the company is close to meeting its goal of driving 40 percent of its software revenue through the channel by 2015.”

“Medical Insights” Project from SAP to Accelerate Personalized Treatment for Cancer Patients

Photo: Shutterstock

ORLANDO — To support patients in receiving the maximum benefit from every research and healthcare dollar spent, SAP AG is developing innovative solutions aimed at significantly improving health outcomes while cutting costs and improving outcomes at each step of healthcare delivery. Providing the latest example, the company today announced the first early, live deployment of the project “Medical Insights” for clinical data integration, an important advancement in cancer treatment. The announcement was made at HIMSS14, being held February 23-27 in Orlando, Florida.

“The entire healthcare community recognizes the need to simplify and extract data for the benefit of individual patients,” said Bill McDermott, co-CEO and member of the Executive Board of SAP AG. “With the ‘Medical Insights’ project, we’re working on being able to unleash the power of the SAP HANA platform and apply this breakthrough to improving patient care. There is no question that real-time data and analytics will drive more personalized care and better outcomes throughout the healthcare system.”

Almost every instance of cancer is unique. There is an immense volume and variety of information processed in providing care to those who have not responded to standard therapies, such as the analysis of multiple cohort studies, long-term studies following groups of people who have and do not have a given condition. Today, these tasks involve manually reviewing, parsing and consolidating the relevant information, typically in spreadsheets. These manual processes cause significant delays for patients waiting for care targeted at individual cancers.

With this project, SAP will aim to improve the accuracy of cancer diagnoses and, ultimately, patient outcomes by enabling integrated access to clinical information and analyzing complex data sets in real time. Built on the SAP HANA platform, the project was developed in partnership with the German National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) and is now in use for testing purposes at its facilities in Heidelberg.

“We are now able to extract and analyze data from various sources and present it to physicians and researchers in a way that enables surprising new insights,” said Professor Dr. Christof von Kalle, director, translational oncology, NCT. “In the future, we would like to use the SAP HANA platform for every diagnostic and therapeutic step, because every cancer is different and can vary immensely from one patient to the next.”

“Medical Insights” is envisioned to use a generic healthcare data model and semantic capabilities to pull patient data from many different sources, such as clinical information systems, tumor registries, biobank systems and even text documents like a physician’s notes. It will then run the advanced data analytics on the underlying SAP HANA platform and provide the results in real time. This is meant to help increase efficiency among various medical teams so that doctors have the most up-to-date information on their patients allowing for a faster, more accurate diagnosis. Patient cohorts are pictured to be posted and edited collaboratively, exported for further analysis in other software or compared according to different metrics.

“Medical Insights” will also offer a comprehensive overview of each patient’s medical history in a graphical timeline, making it easy to access information on any level of detail. This one source of truth with easy integration of all data shall give doctors a complete picture, helping them to reduce the risk of misdiagnosis and focus on optimal treatments instead. For individual patients, all of this will mean faster research and better targeted treatment.

SAP is also focused on designing healthcare solutions on top of the SAP HANA platform that are easy to use and can be accessed on any device.

“In the current healthcare environment, real-time data analysis is critical to providing more precise care and producing better patient outcomes,” said Jeff Wilhelm, president & CEO of Fusion Consulting Inc., an SAP partner. “SAP HANA puts analytics in the hands of healthcare practitioners, researchers and administrators when they need it, helping ensure accurate and real-time information is leveraged to shape care decisions.”

HIMSS attendees can connect with SAP at the following on-site locations during the event:

  • Booth #1519: Meet the team and get the “Medical Insights” project demo

  • Booth #692: See Big Data in action at the “Big Data Bus”

  • Booth #883: Explore the Business & Clinical Analytics Knowledge Center

SAP and DigitalRoute Join Forces to Enrich Customer Experience for Telcos

SAP_DigitalRoute_Big-Data_shutterstock

Photo: Shutterstock

WALLDORF — SAP AG today announced a significant expansion of its relationship with DigitalRoute, a leading provider of new approaches to Big Data management. The targeted result is an enhanced solution that shall bring together data from both operational and business support systems (OSS and BSS), providing unique insights that are expected to help communications service providers (CSPs) navigate toward monetizing their Big Data in today’s stormy market conditions.

Historically, it has been difficult for CSPs to create a bridge between data stored in OSS and BSS systems and, as a result, they have relied on incomplete information when engaging with customers. Connecting these two key data stores makes it possible to give carriers a more complete view of customers’ experiences and interactions, and could be the basis of insight that helps to reduce churn, create more successful service offerings and drive deeper customer satisfaction. This is particularly important in today’s market, which is characterized by increased margin pressures, new categories of competition and rapidly changing consumer expectations and needs. Faced with these pressures, CSPs are focusing on customer experience and loyalty in order to secure future margins and maintain profitability.

By working together to create this enhanced offering, SAP and DigitalRoute are uniquely positioned to deliver the holistic view and rapid insights that telecoms operators need. The SAP Convergent Mediation application by DigitalRoute collects and processes data from operational and business solutions, which can be used to power analytics based on the SAP HANA platform in conjunction with the SAP InfiniteInsight solution and the SAP Customer Usage Analytics analytic application. Merging Big Data derived from both network and business sources in real time, SAP and DigitalRoute plan to offer a solution that directly enables the CSP to address challenges like churn management, real-time IT and OSS-based Policy Control (PCRF), network experience management and more — all in a real-time and predictive way. This is intended to enable a CSP to quickly enrich and maximize a customer’s experience.

“Real-time insights based on Big Data drawn from operational and business sources gives telcos a platform and toolbox to drive enhanced customer experience,” said Johan Bergh, CEO, DigitalRoute. “This quickly supports minimizing churn and enabling new services to reach market far more accurately matched to the customer’s interests than could be accomplished before. This also clearly shows that the partnership between SAP and DigitalRoute delivers real value beyond not only BSS but, now, across all aspects of the communications industry. I believe that the Big Data movement in telco will look to SAP and DigitalRoute to lead the way.”

“SAP and DigitalRoute’s combined expertise in the OSS and BSS domains is unrivalled,” said Howard Stevens, global general manager, Telecommunications Business Unit, SAP. “This partnership will enable us to help our customers engage more meaningfully with their customers, providing 360-degree customer insight that is real-time, actionable and even predictive.”

Bill McDermott on Next Generation of Innovators

McDermott_SAP-Innovation-Center In an SAP TV video, Co-CEO Bill McDermott shares his views on the impact of the new SAP Innovation Center in Potsdam. Discussing the center’s role in the company’s future strategy, McDermott emphasized the important opportunity to develop new, breakthrough innovations on the SAP HANA platform as well as a focus on the next generation and inspiring millennials to get excited about the consistency and quality of SAP.

Accelerating a Culture of Innovation

hoos It occurs to me that like many remaining parts of Germany’s Autobahn, there is no speed limit on the pace of innovation.

Disruptive innovation is the new normal. In the 21st century, the fastest companies who convert big ideas into business outcomes are the winners. The only way this is possible is with a culture of innovation that encourages people to dream and embraces their curiosity for a better way.

Unfortunately, dreams and questions are endangered species in too many corporate cultures.

Hal Gregersen, who will speak later this week at the SAP Executive Forum in Potsdam, Germany, has focused his research on asking questions as the ultimate foundation of innovation. But for big companies with established businesses, questions can be seen as threatening to stability or, worse, destructive.

This is precisely why, thanks to our courageous founder and chairman, Hasso Plattner, SAP has behaved like a start-up throughout our 42 year history. A start-up culture is permanently humble and hungry – always driven to change the world and keenly aware that success is temporary.

We acted on this standard in 2010, when SAP rejected complacency as the market leader in favor of customer-driven innovation, new markets and growth opportunities. Notwithstanding the consistent double-digit growth from that winning strategy, we acted again this year, targeting complexity as the most intractable challenge facing businesses and CEOs – especially the complexity that’s rooted in the legacy IT stack. We fundamentally believe that when businesses simplify everything, they’ll free time and resources to accelerate innovation.

On February 12th we’ll advance this mission and once again further our entrepreneurial spirit with a new SAP Innovation Center (pictured). This exciting Potsdam facility will house teams that focus on creating cutting-edge applications that put the user front and center. Simplicity and beautiful design will be the core values for everything. The center combines fresh ideas from Berlin’s vivid start-up scene with the global reach and scale of SAP.

Our top innovator – the man I believe is the innovator of this generation – Dr. Vishal Sikka, understood early that we would need state-of-the-art facilities to focus on unleashing the full power of SAP HANA, the world’s standard in-memory technology platform. So in 2011, the SAP Innovation Center was born with a small and elite team in Potsdam and Walldorf. We set ambitious goals – to find the best and the brightest minds with experience in programming and an appetite to disrupt and rethink everything.

We found the right leaders in Juergen Mueller and Jens Krueger. We recruited researchers and students from the Hasso Plattner Institute for Software Systems Engineering, world-class universities in Berlin, the Fraunhofer Institutes, Stanford University and MIT.

But the most significant aspect of the new center isn’t about what we put into it. The exciting promise rests in the work that’s coming out!

The center has already developed the Patient Data Explorer tool, empowering users to filter and group patients according to different attributes, fully customizable for different cancer centers. Thanks to a generic healthcare data model, patient data from different sources such as clinical information systems, tumor registries, biobank systems and even text documents (like physicians’ notes) can be accessed, analyzed, and put into actionable context. In addition, the tool offers a comprehensive overview of each individual patient’s medical history in a graphical timeline, making it easy to access information on any level of detail.

This is but one example of the possibilities.

On issues ranging from health care and education to sports and entertainment, we couldn’t be more curious about how technology will make the world run better and improve people’s lives. We’ve put this mandate to our team in Potstdam and around the world, challenging them to bring their diverse backgrounds and points of view to the table.

We believe they’ll succeed and hope they’ll fail often. That may sound strange, but like curiosity and ambition, failure is another critical ingredient in the secret sauce of innovation. When the next great generation gets a bold mandate and game-changing technology, they’ll race to create the next big idea. When they miss, they’ll learn. When they learn, the world will benefit.

Every leader should ask what they can do to accelerate this process of dreaming, learning, doing, failing, winning and dreaming again. Our new Innovation Center is a great case study. If you’d like to see it, please let me know.

WALLDORF — SAP AG today announced that Schindler has gone live with manufacturing solutions from SAP to streamline the company’s plant operations. A leading global provider of elevators, escalators and related services, Schindler selected the SAP Manufacturing Execution application to optimize productivity and plant performance, driving closed-loop manufacturing for greater transparency, reliability and global product traceability. The application will also serve as a standard solution across Schindler’s electronic division to serve their wide customer base. As part of a broader “idea to performance” initiative, SAP solutions were created to help manufacturing companies bring new and individualized products to market faster by connecting enterprise systems with shop floor machines for a holistic view of the business.

Schindler’s innovative and environmentally friendly access and transit-management systems make an important contribution to mobility in urban societies. Schindler mobility solutions move 1 billion people every day worldwide. But manufacturing processes for the Schindler Electronics plant that produces the electronic components for elevators faced challenges in limited transparency and the cost of legacy shop floor systems. In daily operations, such as the production of printed circuit boards, difficulties arose in retrieving products in global shipments and retrieving full detailed product traceability. Schindler recognized that this was a broader issue within its manufacturing base, and needed a future-proof solution that would be easy to roll out across all of their geographies.

Schindler implemented integrated solutions for responsive manufacturing from SAP to replace legacy software. Future-proof SAP Manufacturing Execution helps the electronics division manufacture more quickly based on more efficient processes so that the plant becomes a model for other subsidiaries, specifically in China. The application also enables integrated shop floor operations with end-to-end business processes in real time to increase global coordination. Other benefits include optimized operator productivity by helping reduce up to 75 percent of the time spent on entering data into the shop floor system. The clear work-in-progress integration to the enterprise resource planning (ERP) application SAP ERP enables visibility from top floor to shop floor.

“Today, we spend 18 to 20 percent of the shop floor operator time in interaction between the operator and our manufacturing execution system,” said Alessandro Calidonna, IT Applications Manager, Schindler Electronics. “Now with the introduction of SAP Manufacturing Execution and the touch screen POD, our goal is to reach the three percent maximum interaction.”

New SAP Solution Helps Businesses Take Project Operations to the Next Level

WALLDORF — To help companies manage project-based businesses, SAP AG today announced the SAP Commercial Project Management application. Leveraging existing capabilities of SAP Business Suite software, the application offers coverage of the lead-to-cash scenario for projects, beginning with selling a project through planning and delivery. SAP Commercial Project Management brings project-related front- and back-end information into one integrated system and makes it available to project managers, administrators and executives.

According to recent performance benchmarking from SAP, more than 70 percent of companies have only limited capability to track project risks from identification to resolution stage, in collaboration with subcontractors and customers. SAP Commercial Project Management bridges this need by enabling users to manage the project value chain end-to-end and helps companies increase project profitability and improve employee productivity. The application allows creating optimal bids leveraging information from past projects as well as best practices in order to derive bids that are both profitable and competitive. Moreover, it supports stringent issue and change management processes and their impact on project cost and revenues. SAP Commercial Project Management offers one cohesive view into all project aspects to help enhance project control, mitigate risks and take the best actions.

“While a high percentage of project profitability is determined at the bid stage, around half of all projects are not delivered to plan — in fact, on average 20 percent of project value is at risk,” said Chakib Bouhdary, executive vice president, Global Industry Solutions and Customer Value, SAP. “SAP Commercial Project Management enables professional services, engineering, construction and operations and other project-based industries to reinvent the way they sell and deliver their services by offering full transparency throughout the project life cycle while helping ensure project profitability.”

SAP Commercial Project Management is an extension to SAP Business Suite and contains three packages: project workspace, project cost and revenue planning and project issue and change management. The application runs on the SAP HANA platform, is mobile-enabled and can be used by companies selling and delivering projects to customers as well as those running internal projects. Additional mobile apps are also made available by partners. SAP partner Mindtree offers mInspect, a mobile app that supports the issue management component of SAP Commercial Project Management, and mWorkspace, a mobile app that provides key information to project managers.
