Powering Up In China With Spend Management

State Grid Corporation of China – the world’s largest electric utilities company – powers up with Ariba’s spend management solutions from SAP partner Wicresoft.

Wicresoft Co., Ltd., an official service provider of solutions from Ariba, an SAP company, works closely with SAP Partner Service Delivery and Ariba to provide first-class service to customers in Greater China and Asia-Pacific (APAC).

Founded in 2002 and headquartered in Shanghai, China, Wicresoft engages with industry leaders from a wide range of sectors, including high-tech, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, trading, and manufacturing, as well as retail and distribution. Through advanced process control, innovative technologies and tools, and efficient people and project management systems, Wicresoft analyzes customer requirements and consistently helps clients streamline business processes, improve core competencies, and reduce operational expenditures to create value and achieve competitive advantages. Based on continuous innovation and investments, Wicresoft fully complies with world-class service and technology standards.

In sync with its mission to be a trusted global IT service provider, Wicresoft partnered with Ariba in 2004 to bring Ariba’s industry-leading spend management solution to customers in APAC. In early 2012, Wicresoft became the sole authorized reseller and value enablement partner of Ariba’s spend management solutions for the Greater China market.

State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) is among Wicresoft’s more than 30 successful customers in APAC that run Ariba.

Powering up at SGCC, the world’s largest electric utilities company

SGCC was founded in December 2002 as a pilot state-owned corporation by the Chinese State Council and ranks seventh in the Fortune Global 500 enterprises of 2013. The corporation has more than 1.5 million employees and serves 128 million customers. Its business area covers 26 provinces, including autonomous regions and municipalities – in total, covering 88% of China’s land area.

As a large enterprise, SGCC faced the following challenges:

  1. Lack of centralized bidding platform with visibility for purchasing management

  2. Lack of data structure, business process automation, decision support, and innovative models in large-scale, centralized bidding and purchasing processes

  3. Lack of centralized control in procurement and contract execution processes

SAP Partner Quality program drives project success

Wicresoft worked closely with SGCC to assess its IT requirements and develop a detailed project plan using quality management techniques and tools from the SAP Partner Quality program. This program is one of an array of services provided by SAP Partner Service Delivery that aims to help partners with the knowledge and tools to create a quality management framework for the successful delivery of their customer projects.

Wicresoft joined the SAP Partner Quality program in early 2013, and successfully obtained its SAP Partner Quality accreditation. While participating in the program, Wicresoft integrated SAP’s project management methodology very quickly and enhanced project documentation, standardized project process based on the original implementation process, and added more detailed project quality and risk controls.

This program has given Wicresoft a tremendous amount of professional satisfaction and has improved the company’s performance in the bidding process for additional projects by making it more competitive.

Profitability up 50% with greater transparency, seamless integration

Working collaboratively with the customer, Wicresoft successfully introduced the Ariba Spend Management Suite for SGCC in 2010. It later delivered the SGCC E-Commerce Platform in 2011 and Electrical Power Platform in 2013. Through these highly acclaimed projects, Wicresoft has helped SGCC achieve the following benefits:

  1. Established a sourcing platform for SGCC, based on six bidding models, including open tendering, selected bidding, competitive negotiation, price comparison and analysis, and single-source procurement and bidding

  2. Established purchasing standards to unify data model and realize whole process data structured for SGCC

  3. Gained revenue of nearly RMB 90 million, with more than 50% of profit increment In the first 6 months of using Forward Auction

  4. Seamlessly integrated main data platform, SAP ERP, Ariba, and supplier collaboration

  5. Integrated all of level 1 and level 2 SGCC suppliers into management system

The success of these implementations underscores Wicresoft’s commitment to its customers. As a key partner and top provider of Ariba spend management solutions in APAC region for sales, implementation, integration, support, and training services, Wicresoft aims to provide first-class service in combination with leading technologies and industry best practices to drive competitive advantage for its customers.

A Time for Founders

It hardly seems like a big headline when a company announces a new award program for its employees. To save you the suspense, that’s exactly what we just did at SAP with the Hasso Plattner Founders’ Award.

But there’s something behind this award that I personally believe is very special and unique.

Few companies can lay claim to being the originator of an entire industry. Thanks to Hasso Plattner, Dietmarr Hopp, Klaus Tschira, Claus Wellenreuther and Hans-Werner Hector, SAP is one of the exceptions. Four decades ago this team of five engineers had the courage to do something bold. They believed so strongly in an idea that they left secure careers to bring their experiment to life. It was the ultimate act of innovation, a belief that there was a better way for businesses to run and the guts to go for it. Look what they created – not just a thriving company in SAP, but an entire industry rallying around the purpose they first saw. Those of us who have the privilege of carrying the SAP logo on our business cards stand on the shoulders of these giants.

My pride in SAP’s heritage aside, there’s more to this story.

Today every CEO I speak with is hungry for new ideas. They recognize that in this era of disruption, business model innovation requires an openness to new thinking from anywhere. SAP in many ways proves the point – 80 percent of our net-new revenues come from businesses we were not in 2009. Likewise, businesses in all industries will soon find themselves growing in ways they probably hadn’t conceived of only a few short years before. This challenge goes far beyond the boardroom. Winning companies are actually empowering their own customers and employees to help architect their future.

Just recently Hasso Plattner himself reminded everyone at SAP that we all face the innovator’s dilemma. Citing Clayton Christensen’s brilliant work, Hasso made one thing clear above all else: if we stop innovating, we’ll lose. The battle is in the will to be restless – to never stop looking around corners for the big idea that isn’t quite ripe. No corporate policies can make this happen, but they can certainly impede it from happening.

Here’s where CEOs have to play a significant role. Building a culture that promotes innovation is fundamentally about demonstrating that actions live up to words. It’s one thing to say that failure is OK. It’s another thing altogether to reward people who have the guts to try something big that ultimately fails. It’s true that the 21st century workplace is more open, giving individuals and teams some runway to dream, ideate and innovate. But most businesses are still highly complex with way too many layers between employees, their customers and their leaders – thereby limiting the possibility that most experiments will ever be noticed or nurtured. So the role I see the great CEOs playing is less about what they say and more about what they show by example.

So back to our new award – we’re offering it because we want every one of our 67,000 employees to be on notice: the courage and boldness it took to start our company is exactly what we need to keep growing it. We need ideas – bold ideas. We need people to have the entrepreneurial spirit to take our focus on simplifying everything and make it their own personal mission. What can they do that really moves us forward to the ultimate benefit of our customers?

In return for the leadership that our colleagues show, we’ll take the momentous step of honoring them alongside the giants who built us.

This is a moment for everyone to think and act like a founder – courageous, innovative, entrepreneurial. You’ll be able to tell a lot about the future of SAP by the number of compelling candidates we’ll have to consider. Knowing what I know about my colleagues, I predict a really difficult decision lies ahead.

Market-Leading Analytics Solutions in the Cloud Built for Business
SAP has been ranked No. 1 in Gartner Inc.’s “Market Share Analysis: Business Intelligence and Analytics Software” report since 2009. In the latest version of the report, SAP had significantly higher revenue than any other vendor at US$3.1 billion and held 21.3 percent of the worldwide BI and analytics software market, a 5.4 percent increase from 2012.*

In a press release, Gartner Research Director Dan Sommer said BI adoption is at an inflection point: “As the market shifts gear, we see a series of tipping points in 2014 that will accelerate (BI) adoption, but it may come from a different place. These tipping points are half of BI and analytics spend will be business driven, half of new license spend will be driven by data discovery requirements, and half of organizations will consider deploying BI in the cloud, at least tactically.”

Macy’s.com Gains Better Insight Into Customers With Predictive Analytics from SAP

WALLDORF — SAP AG today announced that Macy’s.com has successfully deployed the SAP InfiniteInsight solution to help better understand customer buying behavior and optimize email and website marketing campaigns.

For Macy’s.com, speed to market is key. The company had a number of variables to understand when it came to understanding likelihood of a customer to spend in a certain product category. The traditional approach to predictive analytics would have required a number of data scientists on staff for Macy’s.com, as well as a predictive model for each product category. With SAP InfiniteInsight, Macy’s.com now has a solution for the automated creation of accurate and robust predictive models. The solution replaces the classic model creation process, which is manual, repetitive and prone to human error. Macy’s.com is now able to build 20 predictive models in a few weeks, a 15 times increase in productivity compared to the previous solution.

Working with SAP, Macy’s.com deployed SAP InfiniteInsight in three months and has since seen an eight to 12 percent increase in online sales through more targeted emails to registered users as well as visitors to the Macy’s.com website.

“SAP InfiniteInsight is a product that excels in speed to results,” said Kerem Tomak, group vice-president, marketing analytics and CRM, Macys.com. “It’s scalable, concise and very efficient — it’s the reliable choice for predictive modeling. It’s my go-to product for everything that requires scales for my enterprise level solution.”

Based on patented automation technology from KXEN, an SAP company, SAP InfiniteInsight is designed to bring greater insight to more people by extending the power of predictive analytics from data scientists to line-of-business users.

Job: Information Technology

Hilton Makes Customers Happier by Rewarding its Own Top Performers

It may sound counterintuitive but rewarding employees is one of the first steps to increasing customer satisfaction. This is particularly true in people-centric industries like hospitality. Case in point is Hilton Worldwide.

As a leading global hospitality company, Hilton depends on its almost 300,000 employees to deliver a top-notch guest experience to millions of customers. With over 4,000 hotels and timeshare properties in 90 countries and territories, the company needed a single, consolidated view of its workforce. The overarching objective was to establish a consistent global platform for talent management. After exploring a number of SaaS solutions, Hilton selected SuccessFactors for its flexibility and simplicity.

Making the direct connection between performance and pay

With SuccessFactors, Hilton’s Human Resources (HR) staff sends out online performance management forms, and then uses dashboards to monitor completion and send reminders to managers. They load the ratings from SuccessFactors into PeopleSoft to set employees’ pay increases. “By automating and enhancing our performance management process, SuccessFactors is helping us demonstrate to our global workforce that Hilton is truly a pay-for-performance organization,” says David Mallett, Senior Director of Workforce Analytics, Metrics & Support at Hilton Worldwide.

SuccessFactors provides integrated information that supports decision-making across the company. With easy access to an intuitive dashboard that displays standard HR metrics, executives have the information they need to make tangible improvements. At the same time, HR directors can easily see the distribution of merit increases at each Hilton property, enabling them to guide managers in how to motivate better performance while staying within the compensation budget.

Mallet sums it up this way. “Thanks to SuccessFactors, we finally have a clear connection between our employee performance ratings and the types of Merit increases they warrant. That’s helping us deliver a better guest experience worldwide.”

Employee enablement is the business outcome

Now that Hilton is live on SuccessFactors, the company has a highly accessible platform that makes it much easier to perform critical HR functions such as performance management, compensation planning, and succession planning. After rolling out its dramatically enhanced performance management process to 65,000 employees around the world, Hilton reported a 95 percent participation rate and a 37 percent increase in employee satisfaction with the process.

Giving everyone fast access to the right information is what drives results. Industry analyst Christa Degnan Manning Senior Vice President of Research at HfS Research says that, “Everyone talks business outcomes. But in HR technology the business outcome is enabling the workforce. That comes from better integration and simpler user experiences to focus people back on human activities and let the software do all the automation, administration and analytics that software is good for.”

The business case for HR technology

Hilton’s experience reflects larger market trends. According to the Global Human Capital Trends 2014 survey conducted by Bersin by Deloitte, the HR technology marketplace is one of the fastest-growing business segments. The market for integrated talent management systems will reach nearly $5 billion in 2014, and the market for human resources management systems (HRMS) is now over $12 billion.

But finding and deploying the right HR technology isn’t necessarily a clear-cut proposition. The same survey found that almost 50 percent of surveyed executives in over 90 countries rate HR technology as one of the top global trends having urgent importance. However, only 15 percent of those same executives said that their company is ready to address the HR technology challenge. What’s more, hospitality companies are among the industries facing qualified talent shortages. They need more than ever to attract and retain people able to sell to, communicate with, and serve customers. Technology can provide both employees and managers with the tools they require for success–provided the entire company is prepared to meet the challenge.

SAP Continues to Invest in Data Centers Worldwide

WALLDORF — SAP AG continues to invest in new data centers that enable companies to power the future of business using SAP Cloud powered by SAP HANA. Worldwide, SAP hosts its cloud solutions in 16 data centers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Middle and Eastern Europe (MEE), North America, China and Australia that meet high security and operations standards. Customers can transition their business safely to the cloud at their desired speed. This allows them to focus on operational excellence and benefit from the real-time capabilities of the in-memory platform SAP HANA.

Today, more than 73,000 companies and over 36 million people use cloud-based solutions from SAP. This year, SAP has opened a total of three new data centers in Sydney, Australia, as well as Tokyo and Osaka, Japan. As part of its open ecosystem strategy, the company has also invested in existing partner data centers in Moscow, Russia, that will run cloud solutions from SAP. Additional data centers in Brazil and Canada are planned for later in 2014. SAP maintains rigorous data compliance, data accessibility and security standards that all partner data centers must meet.

Strict Data Compliance and High Security Standards

SAP data centers build the backbone of the company’s cloud business, including the SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud service as well as cloud solutions such as customer engagement solutions and SAP Cloud for HR. State-of-the-art technology and excellent security based on high industry standards protect data not only virtually but also physically against natural disasters. They provide high availability as well as back-ups.

“SAP data centers offer customers a variety of options for the SAP Cloud portfolio. Depending on the respective data center, offerings can range from a public to a managed cloud,” said Gerhard Oswald, member of the Executive Board of SAP AG. “Customers benefit from a dramatic simplification of IT landscapes, all in the cloud and powered by SAP HANA, and from the ability to truly power the future of their business with SAP Cloud powered by SAP HANA.”

All SAP data centers and facilities will run on 100 percent renewable energy by the end of 2014, which helps minimize the carbon footprint of both SAP and its customers. In Germany, SAP received the German Data Center Award 2014 for Integrated Energy Efficiency in the Data Center.

An open ecosystem is important for the success of the SAP Cloud portfolio. The company actively helps partners offer the SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud service from their own data centers while helping ensure they are fully secure and compliant. Partners also have access to the relevant knowledge they require to be successful, including expertise in the deployment of SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud and the transition process from an existing on-premise environment.

SAP Announces Leadership Appointments to Drive Scale and Adoption of the SAP Cloud Powered by SAP HANA

WALLDORF — To advance the technology industry’s most successful transition to the cloud, SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) today announced the decision of its Supervisory Board to appoint Robert Enslin and Bernd Leukert to the company’s Executive Board, effective immediately. Enslin will continue to lead global customer operations and Leukert will assume responsibility for the global development organization. The Supervisory Board also approved two new appointments to the Global Managing Board, Helen Arnold and Stefan Ries, to strengthen the next generation leadership team of SAP.

In conjunction with today’s announcements, Dr. Vishal Sikka, Executive Board Member for Products and Innovation, announced his departure from the Executive Board for personal reasons, effective immediately.

“No company in the industry can do what SAP can do in the cloud with the SAP HANA platform today. I would like to personally thank Vishal for his contribution to take SAP to this stage. We will remain friends as he pursues the next step in his journey,” said Hasso Plattner, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of SAP AG. “Robert Enslin and Bernd Leukert have dedicated their careers to SAP’s customers and employees. They will play integral roles in scaling the broad adoption of the HANA Cloud platform and accelerating the company’s success into a new era. I’m also pleased that strong leaders like Helen Arnold and Stefan Ries are stepping into senior leadership positions to drive SAP forward at this moment of significant opportunity.”

SAP HANA had a continuing strong adoption rate in the first quarter 2014, demonstrating that it is the leading real-time business platform. SAP now has more than 3,200 SAP HANA customers since market launch in June 2011 and close to 1,000 customers for SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA, which was launched just one year ago. SAP HANA is also evolving into the leading technology platform: there are more than 1,200 startups from 57 countries building applications on SAP HANA. Of these startups, more than 60 already have commercially available products on the market today.

“Our SAP HANA platform is established as the global standard, its roadmap is in full effect”, said Bill McDermott and Jim Hagemann Snabe, Co-CEOs of SAP. “Now is the moment for leaders like Rob Enslin, Bernd Leukert, Helen Arnold and Stefan Ries to step up and fulfill the promise of SAP as THE cloud company powered by SAP HANA. We couldn’t be more thrilled by this next-generation leadership team and all it will bring to our mission to simplify everything.”

Enslin and Leukert represent two of SAP’s longest serving and most promising leaders, bringing a combined 42 years of SAP experience to the Executive Board.

“Rob Enslin and Bernd Leukert have played central roles in executing our transition to the cloud and the adoption of SAP HANA,” said Bill McDermott and Jim Hagemann Snabe. “SAP customers are looking for the operational experience, thought leadership and best practices to support their own transformations through innovation without disruption. We are very confident that Rob and Bernd are the right leaders to drive the scale and adoption of the SAP Cloud powered by SAP HANA.”

Enslin joined SAP in 1992 and began his career as an SAP consultant supporting customers in South Africa. He has steadily risen to his current role leading the company’s over 20,000 professionals in sales and services and has presided over the integration of SAP’s go-to-market teams to advance a simplified experience for SAP customers.

Leukert joined SAP in 1994 and has long been one of the company’s foremost technologists and solution visionaries. He was appointed to the Global Managing Board in 2013 after successfully orchestrating the development and delivery of SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA. He will now lead the global development organization in redefining business applications on the HANA Cloud platform.

In joining the Global Managing Board, Helen Arnold and Stefan Ries bring strong executive backgrounds that will support the company’s cloud operations and people agenda, respectively.

A 18-year veteran of SAP, Arnold will assume the role of chief information officer for the SAP Group and lead cloud operations and the HANA Enterprise Cloud, in addition to her current responsibilities as the head of SAP´s internal Business Innovations and Application Services organization. She has broad experience leading SAP’s internal innovation agenda, most recently transitioning SAP to a next-generation financial management system on the SAP HANA platform.

Ries recently rejoined SAP to lead global human resources from Egon Zehnder, where he served during the last three years as principal consultant, advising global companies in leadership and executive search. Between 2002 and 2010, Ries had several global and regional leadership positions with SAP’s HR organization.

Globus Goes Live with Condition Management by gicom

In retail, it is crucial for a company to manage conditions correctly. Family-owned Globus implemented Condition Management from SAP partner gicom to support its expanding operations.

For quite some time, Globus – an independent retail chain with hardware stores, hypermarkets, and electrical appliance stores – had been looking for a practical IT solution, above all to manage conditions more effectively using IT. The company now has the perfect solution with the condition management tool from SAP partner gicom, which is compatible with SAP for Retail.

Real-time reporting made easy

Duplicate entries had caused the old, mainly custom-built system to become error-prone. Furthermore, employees found entering data after a negotiation difficult, because there were different ways of interpreting the information. And recording bonuses was also time-consuming. “Reporting wasn’t in real time, and this was no longer acceptable,” says Markus Buntz, head of purchasing at the company Globus SB-Warenhaus, headquartered in St. Wendel, Germany. “We wanted ad hoc overviews, but without using up excessive amounts of resources.” In short, the company needed a new solution – which materialized in the form of Condition Management, developed and implemented by gicom, based in Overath, Germany.

Now, conditions can be calculated subsequently based on different references, without the need for complicated algorithms. Conditions can be broken down to different organizational levels quickly, while an interpolating volume rebate scale gives a quick view of extracts. The extrapolating volume rebate scale function will be delivered soon. “The system is highly flexible. It can be adapted to suit our needs – and not the other way around,” explains Buntz.

Other benefits of the newly implemented condition management tool are:

  1. The associated vendor evaluation is mapped not only in the SAP solution, but also in the upstream system. The evaluation happens in real time, so action can be taken immediately if there are any anomalies. Price changes can be calculated fast and results can be managed – important drivers of revenue in the face of 4,400 vendors.

  2. Conditions can be defined, planned, and managed. For purchasing, gicom developed a guide especially for Globus that takes users through the maze of 425 condition types. Research is simple, so rapid access to condition types that already exist is possible. Predefined parameters function as selection criteria.

  3. In purchasing, comprehensive forecasting is necessary, to cater to as many parameters as possible. This can now be performed using gicom’s Strategic Purchase Planning.

  4. The customer view constitutes an important perspective, which is why Globus is currently considering a CRM system and would also like to take a look at SAP’s new Customer Activity Repository (CAR). Here, it would be particularly interesting to hook up the existing gicom solutions with the new technologies, to be well equipped for the future.

  5. As an example of innovation on the part of Globus, Mr. Buntz cites the company’s new business line “Globus Drive.” The German retailer – which is headquartered near the Franco-German border – has partly its French customers to thank for this trend, which unites the real and the virtual worlds: Customers order their products online, which can then be collected from the store. “Here, we can experience customer feedback directly on site,” Buntz adds.

Dynamic market demands rapid response

Partner gicom has identified even more advantages. Because there are no longer any double entries, data quality has improved considerably, which means better decisions can be made. What’s more, the need for user training is minimal. Some 300 users currently work with gicom’s SAP-based solutions. In the next phase, more than 40 mobile users will be added, who will be able to plan and perform negotiations right on their iPads. The iPad application Contract2Go should make negotiation management even more straightforward. As well as displaying the current status of contract negotiations, it will be possible to call target achievement or an overview of annual negotiations. The tool can also be used for preparing discussions.

A possible option that Buntz mentions is to connect assortment management to the solution – which would unify purchasing and sales data, enabling a faster reaction to sales performance and customer demand.

There are also plans to integrate advertising at a later date. With gicom’s Promotional Merchandise Management, promotional planning data is processed, the success rates of promotions are monitored, and the results are analyzed for the purchasing and marketing departments. This means even more potential can be tapped.

And of course, this family-owned enterprise enjoys success beyond the German border: In Russia and the Czech Republic, the company plans to implement Condition Management at the same time as SAP for Retail. “In the retail sector, the dynamic markets require us to react rapidly,” Buntz concludes. “We can now do that with our SAP-based solution from gicom.”
