Strategy: China’s Chemicals Market Heats Up

Biz-united Consulting uses SAP quality standards and best practices available from SAP Partner Service Delivery to guide its ERP project for customer Shindoo.

For companies in China’s fertilizer industry, the road ahead couldn’t be tougher. With international markets surging, prices of raw materials remaining volatile, industry risks continuing to accumulate, and industry profit margins trending downward, these companies are experiencing greater difficulties. As the already sizable number of fertilizer companies expands even further, China is developing a huge overcapacity problem and market competition is increasingly intense.

Chengdu Shindoo Chemi-Industry Corporation Ltd. (Shindoo) has taken a pragmatic approach to the situation and crafted its enterprise development strategy accordingly. Already established among China’s Top 500 Chemical Industry Enterprises, Shindoo is a leading supplier of high-quality NPK fertilizers, ammonium chloride, anhydrous sodium sulphate, and soda ash, as well as both edible and industrial salts.

Shindoo knows it will face more intense market competition in the near future. The company, however, remains ambitious and is positioning itself to take the lead in a crowded marketplace through careful planning of its strategic objectives, with the expectation that it will enter a phase of rapid development where added agility will be key to staying ahead of the competition.

Addressing challenges of scale

Comprising 15 subsidiaries spread throughout China to serve both domestic and foreign customers, Shindoo has experienced growing pains through the expansion of its production scale and industrial chain, as well as more and more varied products and complex processes. Recently, the internal management of Shindoo also put forward higher requirements, challenging the traditional management model.

As a result of these external and internal pressures, Shindoo recognized that it required a new IT solution that addressed its enterprise scale, while refining its internal management, reducing operating costs, and generating greater value for its shareholders, customers, and employees.

Casting a wide net in search for an ERP solution

Rather than rely on a traditional approach to labor management or island-based information systems unable to meet its bigger and more challenging development requirements; Shindoo decided to build a comprehensive, integrated enterprise information system as a means to achieve its larger corporate strategic objectives.

During its ERP product selection process, Shindoo visited Stanley Fertilizer and Chongqing International Composites. Shindoo management came away with an understanding that SAP can fully meet requirements in these enterprises and effectively support the businesses’ innovation and meticulous management models. After nearly a year and several rounds of competition, Chengdu Biz-united Information Technology Company Limited eventually won the deal and became the implementation partner for Shindoo’s ERP project.

Biz-united Consulting brings quality to customer project

As an SAP services partner, Biz-united Consulting Corporation provides implementation services for SAP ERP, CRM, business intelligence (BI), and mobile solutions to IT planning for the chemicals, consumer products, and machinery manufacturing industries. Biz-united Consulting has sales and delivery centers in Chengdu and Beijing, as well as its R&D department in Hangzhou, to cover its business throughout China.

Biz-united Consulting also has developed a series of proprietary products, including sales platforms that integrate with SAP, dealer platforms, Channel Management and Inventory System, Marketing Expense Management System, and salesforce automation (SFA) mobile applications.

By aligning with SAP and undergoing a series of stringent quality reviews, Biz-united Consulting obtained accreditation from the SAP Partner Quality program in July 2013. This program is one of a range of quality programs and services provided by SAP Partner Service Delivery to ensure project delivery excellence on behalf of SAP partners through the application of the SAP 10 quality principles in customer projects.

Leveraging the project management templates and quality management tools in the Partner Quality Kit from the SAP Partner Quality program, Biz-united Consulting standardized its project management methodology and integrated SAP best practices to drive quality and mitigate risks in its customer projects.

Biz-united also shared regular status updates from its project for Shindoo with the SAP Partner Quality program and discussed the project risks and mitigation plan with an SAP Partner Quality Advisor quarterly. This approach helped Biz-united control the project risks efficiently and ensured the delivery quality.

Winning with greater transparency and faster decision making

Phase I of the project was closed successfully in 2013 with the implementation of the SAP ERP solution in Shindoo’s salt division and three fertilizer subsidiaries. Phase II, completed just this month, also produced excellent results with Go-Live status at all of Shindoo’s fertilizer subsidiaries.

Mr. Kailu Lin, CIO of Shindoo, says he is impressed by the SAP solution and implementation service by Biz-united Consulting. “Shindoo already benefited from SAP by standardizing business processes, improving enterprise management level, and enhancing the core competitiveness,” he says. “After the system Go-Live, Shindoo integrated marketing, sales, procurement, production, inventory and financial management in one system to build up an efficient platform to manage our supply chain.”

Mr. Lin also highly evaluated the solution provided by Biz-united Consulting and emphasized that Biz-united Consulting helped Shindoo build up the core system to support its business from end-to-end, and also used mobile and BI solutions to achieve the information management integration successfully. Now the senior management team can analyze the business status and make faster decisions based on accurate analytical reports – and win greater success.

Three Ways Customer-Centric Companies Beat Competition

In business they say, “the customer is king” … but do customers today really want to be kings?

They certainly don’t act like it. From do-it-yourself banking to self-check-in at the airport and self-check-out at the grocery store, customers have taken on more of the work to get faster, and often better, service in return.

Online consumers aren’t sitting on thrones wearing crowns either. Every day they give up their personal information, provide useful feedback and ideas on products and services, and promote their favorite brands for free. In return they want accurate real-time information, immediate responses, and quick and easy transactions on any device. But those aren’t king-size expectations, that’s just business today.

The relationship between business and customer has evolved. To be competitive now and win the consumer of tomorrow, companies need to adapt and connect with their customers in new ways.

At a recent Conversations on the Future of Business event, Josh Linkner, founder and CEO of Detroit Venture Partners and author of Disciplined Dreaming (pictured above), led a session called ‘The Customer-Centric Company.’ He gave several real-world examples of how customer-centric thinking can impact a business. Here are three stories and techniques that stood out:

Think outside-in

A customer-centric business continuously examines itself from the outside in, the way its customers and competitors do. Many companies, especially large ones, are so concerned about internal “priorities” they lose sight of what is going on around them.

When Ray Davis, president and CEO, took over Umpqua Bank in 1994, he turned the bank’s thinking upside down. Davis examined the bank from a customer’s perspective, instead of a bankers perspective, and reimagined the retail banking experience altogether.

Over the next few years Umpqua opened revolutionary retail-oriented stores that looked more like warm and welcoming lounges and social spaces than banks. The bank offered customers everything from movie nights to yoga classes to investing basics. It even launched an Umpqua ice-cream truck for community kids. Davis’s customer-centric approach has grown the bank from 6 to 200 branches and over $11 billion in assets, making it a regular showcase on the Forbes list of best banks.

Act like a startup

Successful companies often get soft. They lose focus on their customers and what made them successful in the first place. “Companies get so caught up with building structure and controlling resources they miss opportunities to innovate where needed,” said Linkner. This opens the door for others to steal market share or take over completely.

Dollar Shave Club is a perfect example. Not many people would try to take on shave industry giant Gillette, but Dollar Shave Club founder and Chief Executive Michael Dubin thought otherwise. He started the company on a shoestring budget and decided to make a funny and personable marketing video, starring himself, to gain some exposure. Within weeks the video went viral on YouTube and he had tens of thousands of customers.

Dubin created a business practically overnight, selling a commodity in a saturated market. He did it by connecting with men in a personal and engaging way and yanked millions of dollars of business out of the hands of well-established competitors. “If that type of disruption can happen to Gillette, all companies are vulnerable,” said Linkner.

Be original and authentic

Linkner’s story about Dove summed up the customer-centric discussion very well. He said beauty-brand marketing is pretty formulaic. Most brands hire a model or celebrity, take photos, doctor them up on the computer, and run a bunch of expensive print ad campaigns. But Dove feels this represents an unrealistic standard of beauty and adversely impacts the self-esteem of women, so it went in the opposite direction.

Dove’s Real Beauty Campaign and renowned short film Evolution celebrated inner beauty and real women. It exposed the underside of the beauty industry and made competitors look like imposters. Linkner noted it was a risky move for Dove, but the Evolution video went viral on YouTube and was seen by millions of people around the world before it was released in an official campaign.

As a result, Dove shifted its entire marketing strategy in that direction and sales soared. “This went on to become one of the most successful and prolific ad campaigns in history,” said Linkner. “And it wasn’t because they did what everyone else was doing, but because they connected with the real customer and went in the opposite direction.”

Being a customer-centric business today means more than treating customers like kings. It means engaging customers like people, connecting with them in original and authentic ways, and maintaining a relationship with them over the long-haul.

SAP HANA Revolutionizes Industrial-Strength Safety by Powering the Internet of Everything

Undaunted by the recent hype about the Internet of everything, SK Solutions has been quietly revolutionizing industries since the inception of its groundbreaking anti-collision system Navigator in the early 1990s.

SKsolutions_SAPPHIRE-NOW CEO and inventor Severin Kezeu fascinated audiences at SAPPHIRE NOW with a real-time demonstration of his company’s newest solution. The SK Asteroid platform solution powered by SAP HANA uses sensors on machinery to capture and analyze Big Data, dramatically boosting safety and efficiency across some of the most complex industry landscapes.

When Kezeu invented the Navigator technology in 1991 after completing his Ph.D. in Industrial Computer Science, his vision was to save lives with anti-collision technology even before the modern Internet emerged. “It’s unacceptable that people die daily in industrial accidents, and I wanted to create a solution to prevent it. To make it happen we needed a global networking infrastructure in the cloud, and an in-memory database for the large-scale processing of big data. Today I’m very happy because thanks to our co-innovation partners, SAP and Cisco, we can use connectivity and software to help save lives.”

Going beyond real time to predictive analytics

Headquartered in Dubai, SK Solutions are installed in 11 countries worldwide at construction sites, airports, ports, shipyards, oil and gas facilities, mines, nuclear plants, aerospace hangars, and transportation hubs. A network of sensors located on machinery throughout each customer site monitors contextual details about every activity in real-time. These encompass the machinery’s position, movement, weight, and inertia along with wind speed and direction, temperature, and more. Potential collisions are detected before they occur. An auto pilot kicks in to make immediate adjustments eliminating operator errors. The information is delivered on dashboards and mobile devices, visualized with live 3-D images with customizable views. It’s also incredibly precise.

“If you were my customer, the system could tell you that you will have a collision on your construction site next Thursday around 4 p.m. based on the information collected from sensors on your machinery, the weather forecast, the supply chain data coming from logistics, the attitude of the crane driver, and the predictive maintenance of the equipment,” says Kezeu.

Risk management

Originally focused on collision avoidance, SK Solutions is expanding to become a risk management platform, another reason why the company selected SAP technology. SK Solutions is able to help customers manage site safety and security. “Our customers wanted to know their KPIs like asset saturation, usage rates, and collisions avoided. With SAP HANA, they can get this information in real-time as opposed to waiting weeks for a report. It’s impossible to do this in a classic database,” says Kezeu.

Decision-makers using SK Solutions on a daily basis span the entire organization. Besides health and safety officers, people responsible for logistics, human resources, operations and maintenance are among the typical users. With demand growing for its products, especially in the construction, mining, port, and airport industries, SK Solutions is expanding to open a second headquarters in Palo Alto, California this year.

No doubt the Internet of everything will take some well-deserved lumps as the hype continues during these early days of its emergence. But as more companies like SK Solutions demonstrate what’s possible in the networked economy, substance will replace hype, revealing the actual benefits in this new era of innovation.

Brookshire Grocery Uses SuccessFactors to Supercharge with Highly Skilled Employees

Imagine walking into an 85-year old company and finding out there was no established training and development program. This is the situation that Ginger McCullough faced five years ago at Brookshire Grocery Company.

McCullough, who is now vice president of Training and Change Management at Brookshire’s, shared her company’s journey implementing SuccessFactors Learning at SAPPHIRE NOW, SAP’s largest annual customer event held this week in Orlando, Florida.

With thousands of employees in 155 stores across three states, McCullough says that having field-based training was crucial, along with change management. “Anybody can put in a LMS (learning management system), but if you’re not ready for it with the resources, a plan, and the foundation and solid structure for the technology, you’re not setting yourself up for success.”

Project methodology, executive reinforcement and field participation crucial

Laying the groundwork for a positive outcome at Brookshire’s, McCullough developed both a project methodology for the company’s LMS and a project approach for its implementation. Built-in methods for on-site reinforcement have replaced the previous “launch and leave” approach to training. Executive sponsors are highly visible in videotaped messages, while project teams have a designated administrative ownership role when systems go live. Active field participation was equally crucial.

“We brought in everyone that had a representative of a key user experience including retail stores, manufacturing facilities, logistics department,” says McCullough.

Rebranding changes employee attitudes

Unlike typical implementations of this kind of software, Brookshire’s called its new training system “LEARN.” The acronym stands for Leadership Empowerment and Resource Network, reflecting the company’s aspirations to create a culture of learning. “Some of the smart people on the project team were Gen Y employees and they branded in LEARN from day one. It’s really cool when you’re trying to create that culture and everyone immediately brands that technology, customizing it and building up excitement about what LEARN could deliver,” says McCullough.

Employees appreciate the personalized log-in page that greets employees, providing a complete dashboard of available and completed training. With an internal university, employees also use the technology to pursue an actual degree offered within Brookshire’s. The entire system has allowed the company to deliver more training faster and in a more consistent manner.

Measurable results include employee engagement, savings, and safety

One year after going live, Brookshire’s has a 100 percent acceptance rates among employees participating in the 92 available training courses. Over 300,000 users have completed these courses, including 9,000 individuals. Brookshire’s is also developing short, interactive custom courses to meet growing demands across the organization.

“When we started, we placed a white board up in our training department because we had so many requests from every department. People have realized that this is so much more than a place for training,” says McCullough.

LEARN also provide cost-savings and safety benefits. McCullough says that one cashier training program resulted in $165,000 of fuel savings while keeping employees off the road. “Replacing onsite training with cloud-based learning modules saves us money. And, if someone doesn’t understand the material the first time, we can easily reassign modules without having to send them somewhere.”

Meanwhile, in this video, Brookshire’s employees share their wish list for future courses that range from onboarding new hires and workforce management to supermarket Spanish, forklift training, and food safety. Using SuccessFactors Learning software, Brookshire’s has been able to create more than a training and development program. LEARN has become a vibrant platform for employee engagement aligned with company growth.

Don’t Blame Baby Boomers for the Zombie Apocalypse

SAP Partners with B-TECH to Educate the 2020 Workforce: Direct Path to Jobs

It’s no secret that technology innovations are changing so rapidly that some companies can’t find sufficient qualified employees.

According to CompTIA, more than half of businesses worldwide are concerned about the quality and quantity of IT talent available for hire. Research firm Gartner predicts that by 2015, Big Data will generate 1.9 million IT jobs in the U.S. and that only one-third of them will be filled compared to an average growth rate of 10.8 percent for all occupations.

Now SAP has launched an initiative to put more high school students and young adults directly on technology career paths that lead to jobs. Called B-TECH (Business Technology Early College High School), this ground-breaking program is the result of a partnership between the New York City Department of Education, the City University of New York, and Queensborough Community College.

Students who attend this new 9-14 school will receive both a high school diploma and Associate’s Degree at no cost upon graduation. The curriculum combines technical, design, and communication courses, along with mentoring, job shadowing, apprenticeships, and internships. Graduates will have opportunities for employment at SAP or in the many companies worldwide that run SAP software.

I spoke with B-TECH’s principal and one of the teachers who were attending SAPPHIRE NOW, SAP’s largest annual customer event in Orlando, Florida, this week. They described why they’re excited about the school and what students will achieve.

Learning opportunities for faculty and students

Principal Hoa Tu is an 18-year veteran of the public school system in New York City. This program will be her second stint as a principal. “The B-TECH model adds multiple layers of opportunities for learning among teachers and students. The game-changer is that we have folks at the table who are not only committed to the model, but committed to the learning of the individual to make sure that we are delivering on what we promise: job-ready, prepared, desirable employees in 2020.”

Students are selected based on their demonstrated interest in the school’s theme and program which encompasses both business acumen and technological expertise. This approach also distinguishes B-TECH from standard high schools. “We’re intentionally teaching skills that are key to employment such as dependability, reliability, communication, and critical thinking. These are being integrated across technical content areas.”

There are two majors that lead to associate degrees in either computer information systems or internet technology. All course content is fully aligned with the job demands of SAP systems in real life, specifically sales and pre-sales and software development.

SAP mentors everyone with a real-world education

Tu is particularly excited about the learning possibilities for her faculty and students. “We are connecting the classroom experience directly to the world of work. Working together with SAP and the colleges, we’ve developed a curriculum that provides the skills and competencies required of students to graduate and fill jobs.”

B-TECH is also partnering with the SAP University Alliances program to understand how to use SAP software in classrooms. “We want to know the places where we can use SAP HANA, when do we use cloud, or introduce mobile technology. SAP is also connecting us to their partners, serving as a phenomenal resource to augment the educational experience we can bring to students.”

Niobe Hayes, Instructional Support Specialist and Lead Teacher at B-TECH, is looking forward to applying SAP’s methodologies across the educational process. “Something like the design thinking process that SAP employees use to solve problems, we’d like to apply that to our classroom instruction at our school. We can learn it and explain to students, this is how decisions are made in industry, and why this methodology is important to understand.”

B-TECH teachers and students will use SAP Jam, the company’s cloud-based collaborative platform. The school is also exploring using SuccessFactors to manage student performance and map progress to job goals throughout their six-year education.

Demystifying how to get a job

As for student response, Tu says that B-TECH has already exceeded its goal to attract 100 students per year for its first graduating class, and is accepting enrollment applications for 2015. She credits high student interest with B-TECH’s inherent practicality. “We’re demystifying how to get that job, giving students the soft skills, technological knowledge, and experience to build their resume starting on day one.”

Fast-paced innovation in technology calls for equally transformational strategies to quickly educate a workforce qualified to get the job done. B-TECH promises to deliver that one stop shop for both private and public sectors.

At SAPPHIRE NOW, Internet of Things is Not About Things

What’s in a name, especially when considering all of the “things” that make up The Internet of Things (IoT)?

At SAPPHIRE NOW, Steve Lucas, president of Platform solutions at SAP, was on-hand to clear up terminology misconceptions around IoT and provide examples of how SAP helps customers in this burgeoning space. “I like saying Internet of Things even though others have asked me to call it the Networked Economy and Internet of Everything,” said Lucas. To provide context of just how far we’ve come as a connected society, Lucas asked the audience if they remembered the first “romantic” moment of using the internet such as the first time viewing CNN.com. “We’ve moved from this thing that we log into to something that’s just there,” said Lucas. “The internet is the air we breathe.” Lucas believes this internet of people, “where we do stuff and talk to each other” has propelled us into this new era where we might think about shopping for mundane items like thermostats. “Now if you buy one, it has to come with internet connectivity so an app on your phone can tell you how warm your house is,” said Lucas. “The Internet of Things is real, it is here, but you have to help us build it.” Lucas warns that IOE isn’t about the things, it’s about the apps connecting the things, a notion that John Chambers, CEO of Cisco first acknowledged. Apps become extremely important when you consider by 2020 there will 50 billion connected things generating 50 trillion GB of data. “Think about all the sensors managing all this data,” said Lucas. “There is a way for the sensors to decide and become smarter. It’s about making the network itself smarter.” Smart cities like Philadelphia are cleaning up in the IoT space. One of the city’s prominent trash collectors utilizes trash bins with sensors that determine if they are empty or full. Other cities use predictive policing so they can be in the hot spots of crime. Traffic control also benefits from IoT. “These infinite devices create infinite opportunities for you,” said Lucas. “Clearly IoT is a path to do that. But you need a proper platform to enable it.” Lucas helped unveil such a platform, an aircraft demo app, built on SAP HANA, that tracks a plane fleet in real time. Through the app, users receive plane maintenance and inventory alerts, how an engine repair might fit into other repairs taking place and the best way to allocate inventory. The demo made a convincing case of predicting demand and was a great example of how to build IoT into business processes effectively. “This is not just about getting data from disparate items, this is about going from edge to end,” said Lucas. This is about taking data from IoT and making it actionable into business apps. We have the products to make this happen edge to end.”

SAP’s Bill McDermott: “We Can’t Let Complexity Win”

Today at SAP’s SAPPHIRE NOW event in Orlando, Florida, SAP CEO Bill McDermott introduced a bold, new SAP to more than 25,000 in-person attendees during his opening keynote.

With a new mantra of “Run Simple,” SAP now has its sights set on eliminating the unruly “complexity sprawl” that has crept into the world’s IT and business processes. And as a sign of SAP’s commitment to helping customers run simple, McDermott also announced SAP Fiori is now free.

“SAP has a bold vision for the future of business,” said McDermott. “A simpler world, simpler SAP and simpler customer experience.”

McDermott was quick to recognize naysayers who might claim SAP can’t possibly back the “Run Simple” claim because SAP itself is too complex. “That’s why there is a huge chip on my shoulder and on the shoulders on 67,000 employees,” said McDermott. “We can and we will fight complexity. We have been solving the most complex business problems for past 40 years.”

McDermott said complexity has bothered him since the early days of his corporate career. He highlighted to SAPPHIRE attendees a few different studies that indicate complexity is only getting worse. “Maybe it’s just insidious and invisible but none of us can deny it’s everywhere.”

How does a company create 20 layers of complex management structures? McDermott believes managers create a lot of complexity. Every time a new product is introduced or acquisition brought into the fold a new layer is created, forcing companies into a “whack-a-mole” mentality when trying to manage all of the layers. “A big company should not be structured like an onion and it shouldn’t make you cry when you peel back each layer,” said McDermott.

McDermott ascertains that digital native consumers want their work processes to be just as user friendly as their consumer processes. If that’s the case, why is it harder to engage with employees than friends? Why is it harder to order a tablet at work than at home? Hasn’t decision making become too complex? “From PowerPoint slides to excel spread sheets and endless meetings that lead to nothing, how many of you want to stop playing office?,” asked McDermott.

McDermott said the amount of data is doubling every day and expected to reach a staggering 40 zettabytes (40 trillion gigabytes) by 2020. Sprawling IT environments means valuable insight is trapped in silos; 72% goes to maintenance that doesn’t move the needle leaving less for innovation. “We can’t continue like this, we cant let complexity win.”

SAP customers Conagra and Nespresso aren’t letting complexity win. Conagra manages more than 100 different brands and uses SAP to remove complex layers and enable fast decision-making and real-time pricing all on SAP HANA. As a result, McDermott said Conagra saved $700 million, improved customer satisfaction and is growing faster than its competitors. Nespresso is also embracing the simple side of SAP. With hybris and SAP cloud, Nespresso is creating “beautiful” mobile apps that are “simple and intuitive,” according to McDermott.

McDermott wants every SAP customer to share the same success as Conagra and Nespresso by running a simple user experience with Fiori capabilities. “Everyone said we shouldn’t charge for Fiori. I agree. Fiori is now included free. We believe the future is not what you get from customers but what you give to them. SAP is with you every step of the way. We promise to be your trusted innovator whether running on mobile, on premise or in cloud.”

Behind the Scenes With the SAP M-Prize Winners

I’ve been writing about the finalists of the SAP M-Prize “Unlimited Human Potential” Challenge, and now that the winners have been announced, was lucky enough to talk with some of these amazing teams to find out what has inspired them.

All of the entries in this global ideas contest shared one purpose: to develop “stories” and “hacks” that would unlock human potential and improve people’s lives at work through emerging technologies. However, each team approached the challenge from a unique perspective. Here is the back story behind a few of their winning ideas.

Upending traditional budgeting processes

Budgeting is never easy but the team from New Zealand-based Enspiral is changing all that with its gamified process and open source app. Collaborative Funding: Dissolve Authority, Empower Everyone, and Crowdsource a Smarter, Transparent Budget, is a non-hierarchical process that crowdsources budgets among departments. Enspiral is also developing a collaborative budgeting open source tool called Cobudget. This has become part of the larger Enspiral App Ecosystem, an interoperable set of open-source apps forming an operating system for a new kind of company.

“Our company’s raison d’etre is to have a positive social impact, and a big part of our 2014 strategy is open sourcing more of what we do,” says Alanna Krause, a director of the Enspiral Foundation. “Once we saw the massive positive impact that collaborative funding was having on us internally in terms of shared ownership, engagement, and transparency, and higher quality financial decision-making, we were motivated to develop an open source app that would be accessible to everyone.”

Reinventing knowledge management – how to stop searching and work faster

Lukas Masuch believes that the next generation of search revolves around understanding how everything is connected in the real world. This is the premise behind Enterprise Knowledge Graph (EKG), his prototyped research platform. A student at Cooperative State University Baden-Wurttemberg in Germany, which is a member of the SAP University Alliances program, Masuch developed the EKG during his internship at SAP. The idea originated from a research project he was working on for an intelligent business assistant for daily work.

“I realized that I’d need a comprehensive knowledge base of all the information across SAP, including how everything fits together. The inspiration also came from Facebook’s Social Graph and how Google tries to understand the real world and how everything is connected. I set out to develop this concept within the scope of the enterprise,” says Masuch.

Still very much in process, interest is running high around EKG according to Masuch. “It’s too time-consuming to search for information and people. People are already excited about having a transparent view and what they can build on such a platform.”

Now headed back to university for several months, Masuch plans to continue development of EKG including data protection and privacy compliance.

Transforming how people work together

As freelance and contingent workers continue to grow, Andrew Jones, co-owner and partner at Texas-based Conjunctured Coworking, says that Nomatik Coworking bridges a crucial gap, connecting independent workers with each other and companies in online/offline communities.

“What’s been missing is the symbiotic relationship between freelancers and their viability in terms of generating a reliable income, access to insurance, and infrastructure. We want to create a global community of workers and make it accessible to companies,” he says.

After realizing that many people have similar ideas around coworking, Jones says that his team has been humbled by the entire M-Prize challenge experience. “You have to be open and willing to learn from other folks. We’re just trying to be part of a broader solution that makes being a freelancer more sustainable. Rather than obsessing over a business plan, we want to make it useful for people. Hopefully that will be the basis for financial success.”

Indeed, Conjunctured Coworking is partnering with the Serendipity Machine, licensing that company’s software platform for Nomatik. The next step is attracting beta users in coffee shops, hotels, and eventually airports.

These are just three of the M-Prize winners that will be recognized this week at SAP’s annual SAPPHIRE NOW event June 3-5. The complete list of winning entries encompassing industry and workplace transformation through innovations like Big Data and collaboration can be found here.

Lifetime Brands Cooks Up Tasty Mobile Solution

If you like to spend time in the kitchen, you understand how important it is to use quality kitchen tools. Not only does good kitchenware make you more efficient and productive, it helps you create tasty food for you and your loved ones to enjoy.

That’s why Lifetime Brands, North America’s leading resource for nationally branded kitchenware, tableware, home décor, and lifestyle products, implemented a new and revolutionary quality management solution called Lifetime QM.

”We do not want to put out any product that is not 100% safe or doesn’t function properly,” said Jeff Siegel, Chairman and CEO of Lifetime Brands in an interview with SAP.

Real-Time Visibility into Quality

Quality assurance has always been a priority for Lifetime Brands, and with over 25 brands representing more than 16,000 products worldwide, it’s a big task. The company had to standardize, simplify, and increase control over its global factory and product inspections. Managers needed real-time visibility into any quality issues that popped up, regardless of where the factory or product was located.

“Having information in real time is tremendously important to us,” said Matthew Kamenstein, SVP of Quality Management at Lifetime Brands. “It allows us to communicate with our customers in a timely manner, as well as with our offices overseas and here in the US.”

Lifetime QM is a mobile app created to run on tablet devices. SAP Mobile Platform is used to manage the app’s deployment in the workforce and integrate it into the company’s backend SAP software systems for reporting and analytics.

A clear solution roadmap, prepared by a team of business process and mobile solution experts from Lifetime Brands and SAP Services, set the stage for a successful implementation.

Implementation consultants from Dickinson Associates and True Interaction turned the solution roadmap into reality. They built and installed the app and ensured it was ready for use throughout the company. “We put all of our different companies onto one platform in under a year’s time, staying within budget. We’ve had no issues at all,” said Clifford Siegel, EVP of Global Supply Chain at Lifetime Brands.

With Lifetime QM in hand, inspectors worldwide can easily scan product or package barcodes, check labeling, and perform many different types of product functionality and stress tests. If any issues are found, they simply take photos or videos of the defect with the tablet’s built-in camera. The device’s GPS also ensures the location of the test is recorded and accurate.

Social compliance is also very important to Lifetime Brands. Inspectors use Lifetime QM during factory inspections to ensure they are operating in a safe and ethically responsible manner. A great feature of the tool is that it dynamically adjusts the inspection checklist based on the setup and working situation at each factory. This improves the efficiency and quality of every inspection.

Fewer Defects, Better Consumer Experience

The move to Lifetime QM was welcomed by employees and the benefits to the company are many. “The transition period was pretty much overnight. One day it was paper based the next day it was in the application,” said Kamenstein.

Since going live in early 2013, Lifetime Brands has executed over 10,000 inspections using Lifetime QM and the divisions using it have seen a marked reduction in quality issues. The information required to make quicker decisions and take a smart course of action is now centralized and visible. Data transfer to headquarters, which used to take days, is now done in seconds. “In the past it used to go in the drawer and be filed away, now everyone is notified as soon as there is an issue, in real time,” said Clifford Siegel.

Reducing quality issues early in the supply chain saves Lifetime Brands both time and money. It reduces the rework required when a defective product arrives in the warehouse, cuts down returns from retailers, and results in a better consumer experience across the company’s brands and products.

Innovation is a core component of the mission at Lifetime Brands, so it’s no surprise to anyone in the company that such an industry-leading quality management solution was implemented. “We think about innovation in every aspect of our jobs,” said Christine Thatner, SVP of Data and Systems Integration at Lifetime Brands. “We make sure we are thinking outside the box and have solutions to issues.”

Lucky for us, when Lifetime Brands thinks outside the box, we get happier cooks in the kitchen and more smiles at the dinner table.
