An SAP Performance Verification Engineer is responsible for verifying that SAP systems will perform to the expectations of the SAP solution architects and SAP infrastructure architects under a wide range of conditions that include user volume spikes, data volume spikes, partial system failures, and temporary constraints on key infrastructure components such as network and storage. The performance engineer is also responsible for developing a strategy for ongoing monitoring of the SAP system after it is delployed to production.

The performance engineer has a keen understanding of the inner workings of the SAP components and understands how to monitor the key metrics that indicate the overall health of the system. The performance engineer works closely with the solution architects to understand the key user scenarios, and the infrastructure architect to identify architectural significant uses cases in order to develop a comprehensive performance verification strategy. The performance engineer is responsible for developing and executing a detailed test plan that includes preparing the test environment, test cases, test data, and monitoring tools. The performance engineer works closely with the funcitonal team to confirm the target response times for each scenario. The test execution is typically iterative and the engineer works very closely with the functional team and the system architects to provide interim test results and recommendations for improvements.

The performance engineer is responsible for creating a performance verification report that includes the test results, analysis, and recommendations on whether the system is ready to be deployed. The performance engineer delivers the results in written and verbal format to key stakeholders that include business and IT leaders.

An SAP Performance Verfication Engineer is expected to have basic capabilities required of an IT SAP architect and a general familiarity with various architectural patterns, technologies and architecture management processes. Like the IT Architect the Performance Engineer is able to look across the assigned domain to ensure consistent alignment of technical solutions with the business goals and objectives of the supported unit.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

1) Participates in the review of proposed SAP solution architectures and provides feedback from a performance perspective.

2) Begins to work with project teams during the Blueprint phase to prepare for the performance verification. Key output is the Speed and Feeds document which captures user scenarios, transaction volumes, and expected response times.

3) Develop Performance Verification Strategy for the program and for each application being deployed

4) Develop Performance Verfication Test Plan for each application.

5) Establish and maintain Performance Verification infrastructure to be used by the program.

6) Lead the execution of the test plan. Capture and collate test results.

7) Analyze the results and make recommendations for improvements and readiness for deployment.

8) Develop and implement a strategy for onoing monitoring of SAP systems in production. The objective is to anticipate and resolve performance issues before users are impacted.



1) Knowledge of software design, selection and deployment techniques and methodologies.

2) Practical Knowledge of the application of architecture design methodologies and frameworks.

3) Knowledge of at least one IT technology domain including software development languages and platforms, infrastructure platforms, data management and database technologies, networking technologies and security frameworks and tools.

4) Knowledge of various architecture support tools such as Orbus, Troux, System Architect, ProVision and MS Office tools used in the practice of architecture such as Visio, Excel, Word and Powerpoint.

5) Knowledge and Proficiency in the following products/technologies:

- SAP ABAP based systems such as ECC, BW, SCM, SRM,

- SAP JAVA based systems such as Portal, BOBJ,

- SAP Dual Stack Systems such as PI

- SAP Solution Manager - Specifically Monitoring components such Wily Interscope

- Web: Java, HTML, HTML5, Javascript, Python, PHP, CSS3

- Databases: Oracle, SQL Server, PL/SQL Programming, Stored Procedure, Data Modeling

- Web Application Servers: WebLogic, TomCat, IIS

- Development Environments: Eclipse, Jdeveloper, Visual Studio

- Major Standards: AJAX, JSON

- OS: Linux, UNIX, Windows, VMware,

- Methodologies: Agile, Spiral, Waterfall, Iterative

- Services - LDAP/AD/NIS/License/CIFS

6) Expert level skills in Performance Verfication architecture, methodologies and execution.

7) Hands-on experience and expert skills in the following tools:

- HP LoadRunner

- HP Unified Functional Testing (fomerly known as QTP)

- HP Application Lifecycle Managemet (ALM) solution set, and specifically the Quality Center component of ALM.

- Worksoft suite of testing products

- Wily Interscope

8) Ability to develop and comprehend abstract models of IT solution architectures, including various views of solution architectures.

9) Documents applicable assumptions related to the technical viability of defined and reviewed solutions. Validates these assumptions as needed to ensure solution appropriateness.

10) Validates current and future state architectural models and views as necessary to ensure availability of a thorough and robust comprehension of the assigned domain.

11) Participates in technical incident management and troubleshooting as needed.

12) Ability to work constructively as an individual or in groups with minimal supervision. Understands and can apply software engineering and application development methodologies in a complex multi-project environment. Subject matter expertise across applications, data, database, middleware, mainframe and midrange server computing, network (Intranet/Extranet/Internet), security, and client platform (Including mobile) IT products and services.


Bachelor's degree in technical discipline preferred or equivalent experience required.


5-7 years information technology experience in a large scale commercial enterprise.

Career track record of engineering, developing (coding), deploying and maintaining business critical information technology solutions across a range of technical platforms.

Experience leading technical and functional teams in the execution of performance verification of large enterprise class systems. This includes 1) coordination with the system architects and functional teams to determine scope and develop a comprehensive plan for performance verification test, 2) lead a team of test cases engineers (script authors), 3) lead the test execution phase, and 4) analyze the results and deliver recomendations to the architects and project leads.

Experience in selecting and implementing performance monitoring solutions to be used during testing and ongoing production operations.
