The Life and Times of SAP HANA

Record breaker, disruptor, powerful platform: SAP HANA has outperformed all expectations. Now SAP HANA 2 is paving the way for even greater feats.

In its short history, SAP HANA has proven itself capable of handling the major data challenges of our times. It is helping thousands of companies store and manage their data, and analyze it for better business insight.

Reuters, for example, is using SAP HANA to process over 100 million survey results in real-time. Vodafone is able to identify tens of millions of revenue leakage points thanks to SAP HANA’s fast, detailed analytical capabilities. And Mercy Hospital was able to save $13 million dollars across multiple procedures.

Danilo Gismondi, CIO of Trenitalia, says that managing vast amounts of data effectively, 700 terabytes to be exact, is what enables Italy’s leading train company to stay competitive.

These are just a few examples of how SAP HANA is enabling digital transformation through increased IT performance, simplification and lower total cost of ownership (TCO).

Record Breaker

“In the early days there was a lot of skepticism about HANA,” said Bernd Leukert , addressing the audience at TechEd, Barcelona. “We weren’t even sure if we should enter the database business. But we had a vision, we defined a path, and we walked that path so we can run better. Now HANA is a synonym for real time data processing, and is helping us achieve higher purpose by seamlessly connecting society, the economy and the environment.”

When SAP HANA broke the Guinness World Record as the world’s largest database in 2014, it held 12.1 petabytes of raw data. One petabyte alone is enough to store the DNA of the entire population of the US – and then clone them, twice!

Since then, SAP has moved everything to the Cloud. That’s where customers get real value by innovating without disrupting core functions.

But data volumes are swelling heavily because of trends like the use of online video and the Internet of Things. This means data storage, management and analytics are more important than ever.

Unchained for Innovation

SAP HANA 2 enables companies to manage even larger volumes of data through enhanced tiered storage. But that’s not all.

Many companies must have their critical data available at all times. Think about online retailers whose product databases and online sales applications must be available 24/7. Or imagine if a catastrophe shuts down a hospital, and there is no access to data.

SAP HANA 2 ensures high-availability and disaster recovery through system replication; it also offers back-up recovery enhancements to ensure  critical data is still available in the event of a failure or disaster.

Those are just some of the features that make SAP HANA 2 so useful for customers. By transforming data and database management systems, SAP’s powerful platform frees them up for innovation. Companies can access all of their data anywhere, any time for any purpose. New analytical tools and algorithms, enhanced search, and text and graph data processing with enhanced visualization make it easier for companies to access and better utilize their data.

SAP HANA 2 also offers customers new or advanced technologies, tools and deployment options for the high-scale development and operation of native SAP HANA applications.

One of the coolest developments enabled by SAP HANA 2 is the Earth Observation microservice, co-innovated with the European Space Agency (ESA).

“Earth Observation can be used to help organizations manage risk from natural disasters such as fire, erosion or hurricanes,” said Nicolaus Hanowski, Head of Mission Operations at ESA, at TechEd, Barcelona.

“At ESA, we support the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We believe economic development must take place in a sustainable manner. Satellites make it easier to monitor changes in vegetation, protect and manage agricultural systems and safeguard water resources. Geodata can also help cities and governments become smarter when it comes to managing operations and resources and predicting how climate and weather impact their location.”

With SAP HANA, the future looks bright.
