Team Univation from the University of Liechtenstein were this year’s DemoJam winners at SAP TechEd Barcelona, taking the top spot for their groundbreaking entry called UniBuddy.
College freshmen are typically overwhelmed when arriving on campus, managing a whole new world of coursework along with social situations. Presenters Carolina Martinez and Gaetan Magal wowed the judges and audience with the team’s app demo, a mobile app designed to help students more easily navigate their first semester experience. It uses predictive analytics to quickly bring students together, creating like-minded communities for learning and more. I talked with the winning team on stage at SAP TechEd 2016 in Barcelona in this video interview, as well as a few of the aspiring teams that competed at SAP InnoJam.
UniBuddy Earns Top Grade
Using the UniBuddy app, which functions similar to reward-based gaming solutions, students can find the best study partners while earning school, cafeteria and other credits for their accomplishments, whether it’s learning time for themselves or helping others. Using predictive analytics solutions from SAP HANA, the app automatically sends push notifications to connect students with academic partners based on the information they’ve shared.
The same technology allow students to find like-minded friends with share similar interests who are eager to plan social activities rounding out their educational experience. A dashboard based on SAP HANA Cloud Platform tracks and displays student activities in real-time, allowing school administrators to analyze and understand academic program and social activity trends throughout the all-important first year for the student population. Using the data, schools can see gaps and address issues faster, potentially reducing drop-out rates.
Behind the Scenes at SAP InnoJam
Fifteen teams tackled this year’s SAP TechEd hackathon challenge to develop a solution addressing research and education, working day and night during the SAP InnoJam competition to quality for one of the six finalist spots in DemoJam.
In my video, I also interviewed Ibrahim Soltan, whose team came all the way from Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar. He couldn’t say enough positive things about working with SAP UI5 and SAP HANA for analytics. Evgeny Zemtsov was equally excited about his team’s entry from AccentureRiga. The Confidence app is an advisory platform for students to help them reach their career goals.
